well i've broken down my 1979 evinrude 15hp ..this is my first total rebuild of a motor...
i had a wrist pin retainer failure that ate up the top cylinder....it was pretty deep so instead of trying to get it rebored i found a 1985 15hp johnson powerhead on ebay, totally stripped down basically just the block...... i have a couple of questions before i start buying alot of parts.....
1. will this block be compatible with the crank and connecting rods from my 79 evinrude?
2. which pistons do i buy for it...the 85 or the 79 pistons? and if the 85..are they compatible with the 79 crank/connecting arms? should i use the one good piston from bottom cyl that had 110 psi?
3. my plans are to hopefully do this as cheaply as possible...here is my list of parts so far....would you recommend anything else? pistons, rings, wrist pins, crank connector rod bearings, top and bottom cranks bearings, wrist pin bearings.
the 1979 model # is 15904E and has 388184 stamped on the top of the block and the pistons that came out of it had a part# stamp of 321547
the 1985 johnsons model # is J15RCOB (taken from the plug on the block) the seller said it was a J15COB.....it has 392410 stamped on the block
heres some pics of it...
