What year is the johnson?Does it shoot out of the hole fast to thanks for the info.I have been stuck between 3motors the tohatsu/merc 20hp,the yamaha 20hp and the suzuki all 4strokes and i don't want to spend a fortune but everyone keeps telling me get the 20 it has alot more power so i am still thinking about it.I love the way the new suzuki looks and i have heard it run and it looks like a powerhouse for a little motor.I have owned every motor brand but suzuki so i'm very curious to own one. but i'm a big fellow at 260lbs and so is my brother so i do not want to underpower.

You need to check the load rating of the boats to make sure you buy one that will meet your needs. The wider they are the easier they are to plane on flat bottoms and are more stable.

Re: 15hp suzuki 4stroke

The total load rating is almost 700lbs 3persons,gear,motor so the suzuki is 97lbs and i am at aroung 260lbs but getting lighter by the day:) and the brother is around 250lbs and i don't take but maybe 50 to 100lbs of gear. These boats are alot more capable of holding what they say as i had a 12alumacraft with 4full adults and a 9.8 and yes it was nuts but she floated all day and never missed a beat.

That boat was a light weight boat as in metal gauge difference this is not,it is the heavy series as lowe would call it not the flimzy lightweight boat.I gotta tell u it is a big difference between the two the light has .050 gauge metal as the one i have is .064 alot thicker and stronger and is rated for a 20hp.This boat is not heavy but constructed awesome and weighs 180lbs.I think the suzuki will make it fly.It does not have the same displacement as the other 2 motors i'm looking at but it is 17lbs lighter and that should be somewhat different.

Also i will be going out by myself most of the time.So tell me what u think now after hearing all this i need some good info on a motor.I also found a brand new 15hp yamaha 2stroke in the box for $2100 i could also go that way as i'm sure it will get on plane faster but i never had a 4stroke motor and they are so quiet and fuel efficient.Well i'm going to buy soon but will wait till i gather all the facts from people and weigh the pros and cons out thanks for the reply and fell free to add anymore.

Re: 15hp suzuki 4stroke

When they say 3 persons or 700lbs. Do they give a different total for people, motor, and gear. that means everything , people, motor, battery, gas, ice chest, ice, drinks, food, bait, tackle. safety gear, etc. ?
if not you can make that by yourself but probably not with your brother along.
Yes they can hold more but that is considered over loaded and you could get a ticket.

I have a 15 ft that lists 5 people or 710lbs and 1050 lbs total.
And A 16 ft that says 3 people or 450lbs and 1150lbs total.
The only difference I see is more flotation under the seats, the 15 has a center seat where the 16 does not. But the 16 is 15 years newer.
If you are buying then get one that will hold what you plan on putting in it. I fish alone some times, but is nice to be able to take friends and relatives along to enjoy the day with you.

Re: 15hp suzuki 4stroke

It says 3people or 375lbs which means me and a miget if that.Like i said before i don't pay attention to that because that is just what the coast guard recommends from there so called tests.Like i said in the other post i had 4 full size adults in a 12ft jon boat rated for 3 persons or 350lbs and the toal boat weight was 540lbs so with the people, motor and gear there was around 1000lbs and the boat still floated ok belive it or not,i'm not saying that was smart to do but it was when i was a kid around 17yrs ago and the boat was a flimzy boat so u can't always go by that.

But i just want to know if this motor is the right motor for me that is the main goal and i have heard some very good reviews on it but i am heading for the 20hp or 15 and i need some good hard facts on it.90% of the time it will be just me and the other 10% with a friend or brother so the weight is not a issue just want to know how the torque out of the hole is and the overall performance is.

Jut saying that the boat does not sound like the right one for you and if that is not the right boat then the motor may not be the correct one once you get the correct boat

Re: 15hp suzuki 4stroke

It is a brand new 2010 so that is what i'm going with.I had a 2008 16ft cc key largo which is a flats boat with a new 70hp 2stroke on it,bought it brand new loaded for $15,500 cash and last year had to sell it to save my house i am loosing anyway so i lost both ways.Sold it for $7500 and cried, that boat was one i have worked my whole life for only to be stripped away for no reason.I lost my job and have not worked for almost 2yrs no jobs in fl that pay anything.

So i'm starting over from the bottom again with a jon boat which is ok,the bigger boat will come in a few years. So i have no choice with the boat but i want the right motor and i grow fonder everyday of the 15hp suzuki but i must make sure it is the right one for me.

It is lighter then all the other 4strokes and i can get it new for $2050 so that is a good deal. Also the merc is $2050 but is 17lbs heavier do u think that little weight could make a difference? But it also has a 5yr warranty instead of 3,then the yamaha for $2195 with a 6yr warranty and the largest displacement at 362 which should have the best power,so that is where i'm at,Tough choice but i can't see spending another $500 to $600 for a 20 if the performance is a mininal difference even know the torque should be better and the top end by maybe a few mph.
