I've got a 9.5 HP Johnson shortshaft and I was wondering if I could use it with a 16 ft. jonboat. I had it on a 14 ft. boat and it pushed it along pretty good. How big of a boat do you think I could go with my 9.5 Johnson??

speed is in the " eye of the beholder ".. if it gets along fast nuff for you ,, than it's a goodthing .. it's all relative.. i'm sure that the boat could handle a 30 to 40 hp.. but if all you have is a small motor , heck that's o k

You not be able to get on plane unless you play with the prop (go down in pitch).

Yea, I just jumped from a 25 HP Honda (11" pitch)to a 50 HP Mariner 4-stoke (15" pitch)for my 17 Lowe MT1760 Roughneck.

The 25 would plane it OK with one or 2 light guys in the boat, but it worked her pretty hard. My Lowe is rated for 65 HP, but the 50 will push her close to 40 with just me in the boat. It's all I want, for sure, because if I don't watch it in the backwaters now, I'll end up sliding it in the marshes.

Surprisingly, the 50 is getting about the same fuel economy as the 25 (I've gotten around 12 mpg for 2 tanks of gas on it now).
