In an ealier post, I had a splashwell question about a friends 16' ss. The older gentleman has no internet, so I am going to try to be his go between with the pro's here as he has questions. I will also be posting pics of his rebuild progression. I figured I would start a thread for him.

He is in the planning stages right now, looking to convert his ss to a center console to use around the local lakes for mostly fishing, and some grandkid fun. His plan is to leave the front ss seating area intact to use as seating for the family, but also being able to have a center filler piece to be able to convert to a casting platform for when he fishes. He will be removing the duel consoles in favor of a center console with a cooler seat infront and a flip flop seat at the helm. Any thoughts, tips, or ideas on this layout?

He also is having some confussion on outboards. He is buying a new outboard, and would like to atleast pick out his power now so he can have an idea on cost. The local merc dealer said he would be great with a 4 stroke 50, but he is not shure with watersports in mind if that will be enough. He has also looked at the e-tec since they make a 3 cyl. in 75 and 90 hp that weights 320lbs. Will the 50 be ok? will the 90 be overkill? Anyone out there have some general performance numbers I can throw at him? What do you all recomend?

Sorry for the long winded post, I will have to work on that. More questions to come.

My 16ft SS had a 40 horse 2 stroke on it. It got the boat around on plane but was real under powered. I now have a 50 merc on it and it goes alot better, but I think It will still be workin it to pull a tube around.

Hey there Silveraire.... I'll weigh in on the motor size... I have a 90 on mine and it is more than enough... I can fill the boat with people and it goes absolutely effortlessly. If and when I decide to repower, in truth I would probably go with a 4 stroke 60 to 80. It's more than enough for what we do. With 5 people in the boat I can pull a skier up with no problem with the 90 for perspective. Most of the time it really "depends" --- depends on what you want and what you are doing with how much you are doing it with. Gut feel --- anything less than 60 and with any kind of load it is going to strain at times. 75 would be pretty much bang on. Hope that helps!

PS - Pics would rock!
