Re: 16" Starcraft 65 hp 4 cylinders?
CD ignition means Capacitor Discharge ignition. The early versions were powered by the boat battery. Starting in the 1970's they were phased out and replaced by "Mag CD", powered by electricity generated by special coils under the flywheel. The motor you are considering has battery CD. 12V battery voltage is fed to the amplifier where it is converted to about 300V. That 300V is stored in a capacitor till time to fire a plug. The motor has dual breaker points under the flywheel, purpose is to tell the amplifier when to discharge the 300V. Then the 300V is discharged through the primary winding of a single spark coil, inducing a high voltage in the secondary winding, sufficient to fire a spark plug. But hold on, it isn't done yet. Now that high voltage must be directed to the proper spark plug. That happens by sending it to a distributor, also under the flywheel, which points it to the proper plug wire. Carelessness or lack of maintenance will blow the amplifier. The distributor is a POS. The breaker points are ok, but require maintenance. There is an anti-reverse spring that prevents the motor from running backwards (yes, it can), that must be serviced, along with the breaker points. Many parts are unavailable or very expensive.
Mag CD, on newer motors is very different. No battery voltage needed, or amplification. No breaker points. No distributor. Separate spark coils for each cylinder. Difference? Like night and day.
EDIT: You can see the exploded parts diagram for your 65hp at
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/parts.php?gclid=CKLS__vfppsCFRKIxwodFlHZxg. It is a 1968
EDIT: EDIT: The price is dirt cheap. If I were looking for a boat I would consider it. I just want you to know you may be looking at some work and possible expense, and will probably have to do your own repairs. Who knows, it might be a turn key and go. If not, you can always part it out.
