Re: 16' Supersport "rolling rebuild"

with the left over rivets after pulling the floors and other pannels; I just used a drill bit, and it zipped right down the core and I had no issues with removal that way. :)

And nice boat, should come out real nice!

I used epoxy, west system... $$ but it also double as a nice strong glue. :D

I found many uses for the stuff other than boat building already

I tried the drill bit, but It took too long and I hate running a drill any longer than I have to. I ordered some epoxy a while back for the ski champ, and I've been eyeballing it for some stuff in the bathroom. (I've got a bathroom remodel that's going on 3 years )

Re: 16' Supersport "rolling rebuild"

Some updates! I worked roughly the same amount of time today as I did yesterday. Sure feels like I got more done yesterday!

Started the day with strippers...

Ran over to the varnish tent and put a coat of spar on. That stuff has a strong odor - everywhere in my backyard I could smell it. Not a bad smell per se, but strong. No pictures of that one!

Then I went back and started throwing some paint on the consoles! Feels nice to get something looking nice rather than tearing stuff apart!

That photo is really bad. Unfortunately a new camera eats into the boat budget, and I'm foaming at the mouth to get this bugger in the water! Paint is Rusto black and Rusto sand - That sand looks way lighter than it really is. Ultimate plan is for all vertical surfaces to be black and all horizontal sand.

Bow structure tin

Topside paint!

Unfortunately, we had one of those awesome "hey look the sun is out and it's POURING RAIN" just as I was finishing the last coat, so I'll have to go back thru and touch this paint up. I actually only used one rattle can for this, which surprised me. To note : I don't plan on using a rattle can on everything. I've got HVLP for the bigger paintjobs :D

That's it for today/the weekend - heading out fishing tomorrow!

you've got the hammer down Yeonik! At this pace, you'll have that thing on the water in no-time!

Good luck tomorrow!

I have to comment on this stage of the resto. Reading other's threads, I always hated when the floor was being varnished. It just seemed to drag... "oh look, more pics of epoxy curing!".

Now I see the other side of it. While it's cool that it's getting done, this is the most boring job of em all. Come home, slap a coat of varnish on em, wait till tommorrow...... then do it all over again.

Almost makes me wish I went with epoxy so I wouldn't have to put so many coats on =\

Ahhhh... but it is progress in the right direction!! At least you don't have to stand there and watch it dry!!! Now that would be awful boring!! :)

Keep up the good work... it's looking good!

Re: 16' Supersport "rolling rebuild"

I was waiting for that =D

Thanks bud!

All this *does* give me time to do the odd little things that I haven't worked in yet, like pull all the wiring, strip the vinyl adhesive from under the gunwales, re-seal the lower unit...

How much odor is there from U.S. Comp. epoxy? Could a guy get away with using it downstairs and not stinking up the whole house?

Great looking SS Yeonik. What brand of Spar are you using? I have tried a few and found helmsman the best with the least odor. I noticed in one of your photos a propane tank, if you are on propane heat for your house and your tank is not full call around for pricing. propane is what I do and it has gone up 7cents a liter in the last week and is expected to go way high before heating season.

Re: 16' Supersport "rolling rebuild"

Thanks guys, I'll probably go with epoxy next time around just because I don't have any outbuildings to setup varnish in =\ My one shed only holds 2 pieces of floor... so 6 coats (4 bottom 2 top) on 2 pieces = 6 days + 6 days for the other two. ugh I shouldn't have typed that out ;p (edit : I'm putting more coats on the top when after I fasten it in the boat).

Glen, I'm using Cabot spar varnish. Not sure on gloss/semi-gloss/satin. I think I grabbed satin. Thanks for the tip on propane - we've heated with it for the last couple of years, but I'm in the process of installing a pellet stove. We ran a pellet stove for 2 years at our old house and it was WAYY cheaper, just noisier. I paid somewhere around 2500 bucks last year for propane, and I'm looking at maybe 5-600 for pellets. It's a no-brainer! I have no idea why we didn't do it sooner, this pellet stove has been sitting in our shed for 3 winters =(

I'll still need some for hot water and such, so I'll have to check it out =D

Ha! Epoxy is great to work with...almost odorless.

I personally don't use epoxy on PLY without fiberglass cloth (to prevent checking). It more than doubles the cost but IMO it's worth the expense since none of your investment is wasted...whereas if the PLY checks, you're exposing untreated wood to the elements.

I also recommend using anything BUT the Admiral's favorite measuring cup as a mixing bowl

not much odor unless you've thnned it with xylene or some such, in which case, that will be the odor you smell. but i'm a big fan of making the 1st coat or 2 of epoxy be so thin that it literally soaks into the wood and thus saturates the outer wood fibers. glass cloth is nice but be careful where you use it....fit on consoles etc might be affected.

Yah, I deal with fiberglass at work and I hate it.

Like, with a passion. If I absolutely HAD to do it, I might, but... yeah.

Re: 16' Supersport "rolling rebuild"

The sound it makes probably isn't appropriate for this forum...

SO still waiting on varnish to dry. That said, I have to elaborate on some things. For those of you that remember page 1, I wasn't going to do alot of the standard rebuild stuff until later. My plan was to try to get her on the water near the end of september. I wanted to get a couple of trips in before the snow flew, not only so that I had some more motivation but also so the admiral could enjoy it, and authorize some more expenses. :D

That said, by going that route I was going to forgo some things - good seats, nautolex, other money stuff. Dumping all this money into a boat is fine if it's spread out, but I can't afford to do it all at once! =D I've been hauling trying to get things done, and I also was going to skip out on some other stuff - ski locker for storage comes to mind.

I started thinking about it yesterday and kinda got confirmed today. I think I'm pushing back my splash date for the spring. This way, I'll have time to add the things I want, and I can spread out the expenses rather than buy cheap junk now that I'll have to replace later anyways.

I was pulling out some wiring yesterday. The P.O. had a couple of bus bars screwed into the transom :)facepalm:) and as I was unscrewing em I noticed it was flaking a little bit. Well, today I was walking around the boat pondering my next move(s) and I started poking at it. The meat in the middle is definitely solid, but there's numerous mulchy areas around the edges. Rather than try to run a motor on an iffy transom, I think I need to figure out a motor stand and replace this transom before any damage is done.

So, now I need a new thread title.

Re: 16' Supersport "rolling rebuild"

Makes sense Yeonik!

I had the same mindset when I picked-up my current project...run it for a season or 2 and then tear into it. It didn't take me long to realize what a "piece of crap" state my boat was in.

lookin' forward to seeing the mulch & aluminum oxide dust fly! :thumb:

Boy if I had a dollar for every time we have seen this happen!! Happens all the time, the more you get into it and the closer you look the more the plan changes. I think you have made a great decision Yeonik.
