1600 lund alaskan with 40hp yamaha 4 stroke

looking at a 2004 1600 lund alaskan with a 40 hp yamaha 4 stroke, I am a little concerned that this is not enough
motor. Will me using on Miss. river with two and sometimes three hunters a 98 lb chessy and all of our gear.

I'm thinking your concerns are justified.

That boat would be far more comfortable with a 75 (or bigger considering the use).

jas, Alaskans appear to be fairly bare bones. http://evansville.craigslist.org/boa/2837196727.html a 40 may be perfectly adequate. 75 is the max rated and that may only be for a console boat.

huntdirt, is this a side console or a tiller boat?

At 16 feet of lovin, I'd bet the weight is same or greater that what an 16' SS would be. Plus 3 hunters, their gear, and the extra weight of a 4 stroke, against the river flow...

Seems like a fair amount of weight to push to me.

Now, if we just need to get from point A to B, the 40 should be just peachy, eh?:)

Yep, I think the tiller was rated for a 50 and the side console 75.

Big Muddy at Memphis? I wouldn't be comfy with the size of the boat or the outboard. I know people navigate it in all manner of craft, including canoes and yaks, but we're talking about a lot of weight and I assume a need to go upriver.
