OK, I have mercruiser 165 I6 in a 76 21' Searay. I can't find a replacement for the accelerator pump piston/diaphram/skirt. I rebuilt the engine last year and I had several other engines and associated parts laying around so I picked the best looking carb and cleaned it and put it on. The engine runs fine but it will die when I try to accelerate quickly and I feel pretty sure it is because the accelerator pump diaphram/skirt (the little rubber skirt around the piston) was deteriorated and I have yet to find replacement.
I have tried several msicelanous accerator pump skirts that I had laying around but they are all too big and the piston actually will not go down into the accelerator pump bore when I have one installed and if i force it down it sticks and will not come back up on its own. I have looked at several rochester 2bl kits including one for a 2GC that I got at advanced discount by looking under 1975 buick regal and they all have accelerator pump skirts that are too big and the one for the 2GC accualy had a piston that was too big not to mention the rubber skirt.
I don't know where to find the correct parts. I found a reference to mercarb verses the rochester and the picture I found for the accelerator pump on the mercarb looked more like mine so I thought well that must be the problem, I have a mercarb and not a rochester 2GC but then I looked up the number stamped on the outside of the float bowl: 7040083, and then found a chart that says this should be a rochester 2GC from 70-72 on a 165 which also makes sense considering where the carb came from. There is a little check valve/ball at the bottom of the accelerator pump bore and there are two idle mix screws in the base of the carb. My accelerator pump is the kind with the 90 degree bend at the top. I can't seem to find the right parts to fix the accelerator pump because everything seems to be too big.
Is there a difference between the automotive 2GC and the marine 2GC?
Do I have a rochester or a mercarb?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
