OK, I have mercruiser 165 I6 in a 76 21' Searay. I can't find a replacement for the accelerator pump piston/diaphram/skirt. I rebuilt the engine last year and I had several other engines and associated parts laying around so I picked the best looking carb and cleaned it and put it on. The engine runs fine but it will die when I try to accelerate quickly and I feel pretty sure it is because the accelerator pump diaphram/skirt (the little rubber skirt around the piston) was deteriorated and I have yet to find replacement.

I have tried several msicelanous accerator pump skirts that I had laying around but they are all too big and the piston actually will not go down into the accelerator pump bore when I have one installed and if i force it down it sticks and will not come back up on its own. I have looked at several rochester 2bl kits including one for a 2GC that I got at advanced discount by looking under 1975 buick regal and they all have accelerator pump skirts that are too big and the one for the 2GC accualy had a piston that was too big not to mention the rubber skirt.

I don't know where to find the correct parts. I found a reference to mercarb verses the rochester and the picture I found for the accelerator pump on the mercarb looked more like mine so I thought well that must be the problem, I have a mercarb and not a rochester 2GC but then I looked up the number stamped on the outside of the float bowl: 7040083, and then found a chart that says this should be a rochester 2GC from 70-72 on a 165 which also makes sense considering where the carb came from. There is a little check valve/ball at the bottom of the accelerator pump bore and there are two idle mix screws in the base of the carb. My accelerator pump is the kind with the 90 degree bend at the top. I can't seem to find the right parts to fix the accelerator pump because everything seems to be too big.

Is there a difference between the automotive 2GC and the marine 2GC?

Do I have a rochester or a mercarb?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ziggy,
I thought it might but now I'm a little concerned that I might spend a bunch of money on a kit and then it won't have the right plunger. Where would you suggest buying a kit from?

i got mine from my local mercruiser dealer. i'm kinda lucky there, he's a mile away. i believe this was the kit i got.. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...ng&inbr=983&bnbr=50&bdesc=CARBURETOR+ASSEMBLY item #69. a good carb cleaning, air blowing out passages and that kit set to the specs in the mercruiser manual #2 yielded a carb that performs proper..

no idea if it applies to carb kits. but, if ya can't tell already, i'm kinda pro using oem parts... the jobs i've done just seem to turn out best when i use real mercuriser/quicksilver parts..

Re: 165 carburetor accelerator pump HELP!!!

there are two idle mix screws in the base of the carb.

I had read that the most noticable difference between the rochester and the mercarb on these engines is the idle mixture screws. The mercarb only has one while the rochester has two.

I have the rochester and it has two mix screws. I feel your pain on the pump skirt, the one in my kit was actually too small... when inserted into the pump bore it didn't touch the sides at all! Luckily the old one was in good shape.

Good luck on finding the right kit...

Re: 165 carburetor accelerator pump HELP!!!

Thanks for all of the help guys especially with regard to all of the available kits out there. I'm still concerned about hetting the wrong plunger in a kit, some of the kits that were suggested that I can see the parts for look like they have the same bigger plungers that I have found allready. I did notice a post where someone said that the mercarb had two different plunger sizes but no mention of whether the rochester carbs were the same way. Just for reference I have tried to attach some photos showing the different plungers, the brown one is the one that came out of the carb and the white one is one that came in a kit that was for 2GC. neither plunger has the skirt on it but you can see the difference in size, the bigger one won't even fit into the bore of my carburetor. Thanks again for all of the help guys, I may just go and look at the other carbs I have and see if any of them have the larger accelertor pump and rebuild it.

Buy a kit according to your carb number. The number is stamped into the float bowl so it WON'T be wrong. Accelerator pumps are included in rebuild kits.

Re: 165 carburetor accelerator pump HELP!!!

Just rebuilt my carb last week. It's a rochester and I got the kit from NAPA. It came with a accelerator pump but we overlooked the instructions in the kit to soak it in hot water before installing it. It ran crappy till we took it apart and started over and then did the soak. It did something to the skirt and now runs fine. I say "something" because my buddy actually did it before I got to his house and I couldn't see it for my self.

Thanks PNW, I will remember that because I would have overlooked that as well.

If all else fails, the smaller diameter cup is used on the rochester quadrjet carb. you will need to transfer the cup to your spring and rod assembly.
