I could not have gotten the lifters replaced and quiet, nor the distributor aligned ... and the old engine purring again without all the help from all of you who took the time. You folks offered tons of great info and thought in a way that made me feel like a "player", not an idiot.
I especially wanna thank iboats.com for creating this life-saving (well, my sanity and my BOAT's life) help website.
I am simply amazed at the quality of info and encouragement I got.... AND also amazed at how good the engine sounds. If it doesn't last it's my error and I know I have the backup of all of you folks.
THANKS MUCHO!!!!!!!!
skiph
PS: I noticed oil spurting and splashing like mad now around the lifters I replaced. Hardly any splashing on the lifters I didn't touch (the back 6). Is that because the rocker arms I installed are not adjusted correctly... or is it because that is the way it should always be?????????

As long as they are staying wet you will probably okay as long as one or two of them aren't whats causing the clicking your still hearing. That could mean they aren't pumping up good enough. You didn't just replace all the lifters?

Hey Skip,

Glad to hear you got your 165 running good. I hope the photos I have posted (a couple of threads back) helped you out some.

It's good to know a lot of people know the 165 I6 so in the event I ever have troubles (knock on wood!), I know I can ask anything at all here!

Ain't this a great site? ;)

Butch A.

The photos helped a lot Butch A.... and thanks. It is the exact same engine setup that I have and I was able to make sure I had spark plug wires installed correctly.
I am now replacing the other 6 lifters and pushrods (YA, I know.... shoulda done it in the first place so quit nagging me, I'm new to valve/lifter stuff).
Actually, it appears, if I'd run some Marvel oil thru the engine for a while it might have cleaned out the system and I wouldn't have had to replace all of these pushrods and lifters. (They showed NO signes of wear at all).
But there is no guarantee that the Marvel Oil could have cleaned the engine out ... the previous owner apparently was rotten at changing oil and the clogging was severe.
After I have all the lifters and rods replaced I am going to run some Marvel Oil thru anyway.... figuring that, if it is this bad the whole engine might be somewhat clogged up.
