What is involved? I have seen photos and note that the hose from the thermostat housing is routed to the rear of the exhaust manifold instead of the front endcap and also that a hose from the front endcap is routed to the exhaust elbow.
What comes with the "kit"?
Are the end cap gaskets different?

Ayuh,.... Hope achris, fishermark, or ziggy see this, as I believe all 3 of 'em are familiar with this adaptation,...

I don't believe it's actually a "Kit" either,...
But merely a few parts adapted from other spots,...
'n if I remember right, the gaskets don't care which end cap yer usin',...

Back when Freebetony build 'is Own freshwater coolin' system on his ole I6,...
I sent him some end caps off an ole 3.0l manifold I had layin' 'round,...
They swapped, 'n did what Tony needed doin',...
'n I think the gaskets were All the same,... ;)

Basically, yer reversin' the water flow, through the exhaust manifold,...

Just out of curiosity, what is the reason for doing this? Is it to increase cooling somehow or other reasons?

You're right bondo........they worked perfectly.
You have a good memory!

i've not done the reversal. though, if when i replace my manifold, or next time i have the engine out, i might consider it...
see the attachments. it's the best i can find on my computer for saved info...

achris is the man with the plan on this reversal kit thing...

Yes, I did it on a couple of straight sixes - I will do a search and get the info. Regarding the end caps, you simply want both end caps to have the hose adapter on it.

Just out of curiosity, what is the reason for doing this? Is it to increase cooling somehow or other reasons?

As I understand it, the reason is to keep the manifold from cracking. With the original design, when the bow is raised due to starting to get on plane, the water simply rushes through the manifold and leaves the front with no water. That causes hot spots. Then when the bow is lowered, the colder water hits the hot spot and causes a crack. By forcing the water to flow from the back to the front, that problem is eliminated.

Here's the post where I asked for some help: New project started.

Here's the post where I finished it - with a diagram of the reversal flow. Project done. There is some basic info in both posts.

"On a different note Chris, I read with interest your note about "fixing" the flow of water to the manifold. #3 has me a little confused:

"3. Remove the exhaust elbow and fit a blanking plate over the water galleries between the manifold and the elbow. Has to have a small (1/8") hole for air bleed."

Where exactly does this step come in? Is there more detail you can give me about this? We will be ordering a new manifold and riser/elbow. I take you you would recommend this on a new manifold?
They are talking of putting a plate to block off the water flow between the manifold and riser (elbow) You will find it on this page: http://barrmarine.net/wordpress/merc...ht-6-cylinder/ "

This is a quote from one of the old threads that Fishermark noted. What do we mean about the plate to block off water flow between the manifold and riser?

The link to barrmarine does not appear to work anymore so no info there,

MerCruiser - Barr Marine

Barr marine still exists and this page shows the parts and numbers.
I see block off plates.
Is this what I would need?

Ayuh,..... Right here,....

MC-20-60207 Stainless steel block off plate (with vent hole) for use with MerCruiser riser #’s 60426, 76351 and 76771. Requires (2) gaskets part # MC47-27- 99777. Used in pre-heating plumbing systems

^^^ Ayuh. Yep. ;) The stainless steel plate forces the water to flow through the manifold then into the riser. You will also need two of the end caps with the nozzles. 1-60252P Exhaust manifold end cap/connector mounting package..

Then you will need the fitting for the side of the riser. It will take the place of one of the plugs on the side of the riser:

I think I now understand how it works - and why it is a good idea.
Any suggestions on how to get the plug out of the riser? I assume it would be a good idea to soak it with some sort of oil (Kroil, mixture of acetone and ATF etc - lots of choices ) for a few days and then to apply some heat.

Good to know. Sounds almost too good to be true.
