hi, i have tiller drive lund sv16. would a 30-33lb thrust trolling motor be adequate for this boat? transom mount seams to be the most cost effective. thanks

Probably. Really depends on how you plan to use it. And yes, they are definitely cheaper. What I've always done is used the transom mount but had a mount welded on the front of the boat too. That way I can use the TM on the transom or the bow. You can reverse the head on those very easily.

a 4mph troll would be nice

That's not gonna happen with a 30-33 TM.

I have a WC16 with a Minnkota Endura 30. When I'm on electric only lakes with just me in the boat, it will do 2.9mph (GPS verified). For trolling at slower speeds, I often use speed 1 or 2 and it does great. For the money, that trolling motor works well on that boat, you're just not going to see 4mph until you step up to a higher thrust which needs larger batteries.

You should be able to get a 42 pounder for not too much more. The Minn Kota Enduras are fine and are widely available.

On my 16' tin can my 30lb thrust Minn Kota will do about 3mph with zero wind.

I'm planning on upgrading to a 55lb(biggest one that's still 12V= one battery) since I want something that can push the boat against a headwind if needed.

My 5.5hp Johnson kicker does 5-6mph, get one of those if you want to troll at 4mph.

Re: 16ft lund trolling motor

I just transom mounted a MK 34# Endura on my Lowe FM165 for a piece of mind, because I run a MK 80# Fortrex up front and anything can fail. With 2 people & fully loaded I run about 3.6-3.7 tops with my 80. It does dig hard with a lot of torque, I think 4mph will be impossible with a 30 or my 34. My 34 pushs my boat very well, it will get me off the lake if need be.. A 42 would be the smallest I would go.

Trolling at 4 MPH with an electric motor is very impractical. It is a battery killer and even the digital motors eat power at the same rate as non-digital on full speed. Don't know what gas engine you have on the boat but that engine just off idle would provide 4 MPH.
