16ft Starcraft mariner project

Picked this boat up about a month ago from a friend of my dads. Its registered as a 16ft 7in starcraft, no year. The plate in the boat says 16ft Mariner o/b. This wasnt supposed to be a project boat but it turned in to one when i noticed that someone had put plywood down over top the old plywood. So the project new flooring began...

Day I got it, has a 1974 50 horse evinrude with new prop, also a minnkota powerdrive trolling motor.






Pics from the old flooring and taking the waterlogged styrofoam out.

This back section wasnt replaced for some reason and you could step right through it.






The pile of styrofoam, probably 100-200lbs total.


All clean and painted the sides.

On to the new flooring. I wasnt sure how the original flooring was laid in so I just did it how I wanted it.




I used the front old piece as a template for the new stuff so that was easy.






Test-fit the new vinyl




New vinyl all glued in




The previous owners had extended the front deck a bit but I made it back to the original size or what I thought was original and added a hatch.

The boat is pretty much down now but I dont have any updated pictures. I moved the console forward about two feet to give me more room in the back for rods/downriggers. Im gonna use the boat on lake mi for salmon this year. Kinda was in a hurry to get it done so I could use it. Ill get more next week.

Until I get more pics here was a short video i took on the first ride out with the new boat.

I have hull identification numbers if someone wants to help me get a year to this boat. Ive done some google image searches on this boat and havent found one that looks like this thats called a mariner.

Transom is in great shape, I dont plan on doing anything with that.

1/2" treated plywood. Almost wish I had went 5/8" or something a little thicker but this is my first boat project so as the saying goes "live and learn" lol

The vinyl is just vinyl from *******, the color is "silver grey" <- guess we cant advertise for other companies, its the big outdoor retailer that starts with C lol

You need to read thru a few of the other topics posted in the Starcraft forum. Quite a few show corrosion damage in aluminum boats from pressure treated lumber being used by previous owners.

I thought the wood looked green. Put me on the list of those with tin worms caused by PT.

Well if I keep the boat and ever decide to redo the flooring ill look into it. Until then its purely a fishing boat and im not worried about it.

All the mariners ive seen are 18ft or 20 and center consoles. Idk maybe im searching wrong. Still would like to get a year on this boat.

Mariners went from 14' up to 22'. The smaller ones are side consoles.

Thats what ive been looking at. Even looked at the brochures posted on this site and couldnt pinpoint this exact boat. The other mariners look similar but they dont have the backsplash like this one. Will the hull ID number pinpoint it to a certain year?

Yeah it turned out good, when i started gluing it down i started getting off a little bit and the vinyl moved a bit towards starboard. You can see it in one of the pictures I posted. You can see the wood on port side towards the front. I had the vinyl cut perfect so no wood was showing. But like I said its a fishing boat so its not meant for looks haha

It's your boat, and you are certainly free to do w/ it as you like, but there are no scales of how long it takes or how much exposure it takes for the PT to start working on the aluminum. And if you plan to sell it, be sure to warn the new owner that it's got PT in it. Many here have been extremely disappointed to discover how bad the damage is, once they start tearing into their boats.

I would make reasonable attempts to keep water on the outside while in use, and try to keep rain water out of it too. That would at least help.

So if you arent supposed to use treated wood, how do you keep the non treated wood from rotting? Im not tearing up my flooring now because its all done. So whatever happens is going to happen as far as corrosion goes. This is a fishing boat so there will be water on the boat- i fish in the rain no problem.

This boat had treated wood in it when I got it and didnt notice any damage. Guess i got lucky?
