.17 Hmr

Anyone have one? I just found out about these and I'm pretty excited about it. I don't hunt anything but paper anymore but it sounds like fun. I just don't know if it's much more fun than a scoped .22. Looks like ammo is about $.40 a shot.

I don't own one but my neighbor does and it's a real accurate rifle but for targets out less than 100 yards we usually use 22 magnum's because of the cost of ammo. He uses his .17 HMR for varmints and I use a 220 Swift which I hand load for.

That's almost word for word what I read in an article. 100yds and under go 22 mag. I think 100 yds out to about 165 yds the .17 still has enough power to kill. But this was due to energy loss, not cost of ammo.

Is it louder than a 22 mag?

I have played with one and IMO it is a gloified .22 round and not any louder at all. Same amount of powder as a 22 lr and the bullet disintergrates way too easy. It is not a reliable varmit killer...... more wounds then kills.

When my friend takes his out.... I turn to my 22 Mag ....... for reaching out a bit further I use a center fire.

Now if you want to invest get a 5.7 x 28 FN pistol which goes for over a grand but I see it going up in value in the future. The ammo is astonomical in price.

I was just thinking about something that's cheap to shoot that'll make a tighter group than .22LR at 100 yards. My local range is 100yds. I can't think of anywhere I can go to shoot out further than that.

I'd have to fork out some dough, then more dough for good optics. When it's all bought and paid for I just don't know if I'd wished I got something else. I have a lot of fun with my .22LR. I guess I'm just looking for the next thing.

I don't target with my 22 magnum much over 60 to 75 yards it has cheap 3 to 9 Bushnell scope on it and will hold a 3/4" group if its not to windy but that a problem with any light bullet.

If you're wanting to step up from 22lr, you might consider .223. More range, wide variety of guns, abundant cheap ammo (well, until recently), and reloadable.

Yea, cost of ammo is going to be a factor.

I was reading up on .17 fireball, .22 hornet, and .220 swift last night.


Savage has a really nice looking .22 Hornet bolt action rifle (40 Varmint)that's pretty affordable. No nylon stock either. I've recently shot one of their .22 bolt action rifles with the new "Accutrigger" and I really liked it. The trigger felt great and it was very accurate.

.22 hornet isn't much cheaper than .223 and seems a little hard to find though.

If I'm not mistaken, that Savage is a single-shot, bolt-action and looks like it's about $500. You can get that same caliber in a New England Handi-Rifle for half that, and will shoot just as good, maybe better. Same for .223.

You're right. I didn't catch that at first. Savage has a stainless .17 hmr heavy barrel bolt action 5 shot for about 350. I keep coming back to the .17 hmr because the ammo is cheap and i'm just shooting at paper.

Old fashioned old dude here.

Love my little Belgian Browning semi-auto .22 with open sights. It is more accurate than I am. Under 100yd I don't need optics. Over 100yd I go to my Browning BLR in .243, also with open sights. It is also more accurate than I am.

Interested in an excuse or rationale to get a Browning '78 single shot in .45-70. No moose or bison on The Hideout.

I hear ya JB. I have a Ruger .22 semi with iron sights. Had it for over 30 years. I'm a big fan of the .243 too. In fact, a Remington 700 series .243 is on my long list. Thing is, I've been wanting to shoot paper/plink out to 100yards. That .243 ammo costs too much for that.

Last time I was at the range, we moved the target back to 100 yards. I didn't shoot my .22 at that distance but I will next time. I'll give you an honest report of how I did.

You guys ever heard of a 22-250? I got one that was passed down from my dad before he died.It jammed on me one day and i have never messed with it since.
I think its a Remington or Winchester...would have to dig it out of the attic but is it worth fixing?
It would be nice to restore if its worth it.Its in great shape.
It was his favorite varmit gun...

.22-250 is a pretty hot varmint round. Not as fast as a .220 Swift but quite a bit more than a .22 Hornet.

If you want to fix it up get yourself reloading gear or prepare to go broke.

JB - feral pigs seem like a perfect match to a 45-70. you would be doing texas a big service by helping control the pigs. and i'm sure we could generate enough documentaion to prove that the 45-70 is the perfect round for pig control. if you ned an excuse to buy one. and think of the good feeling of dropping a pig at 1000yd with a veriner tang sight. they would be calling you Quigley down under in no time. we have several shoots at 200-1000yds at our range a year and the 45-70 is the primary gun. 45-90, 45-120 are also pretty common.

Looks like we've drifted off topic but that's fine with me.

I'd never seen a .45-70 so I looked it up. What a monster. I shot a .303 British twice last Saturday and that was plenty for me. I was wondering how the recoil compared. I found this interesting chart...

I have a 10/22 Ruger for more then 20 years, great rifle has the magazine, and to reload you just pop in another.

It has takin varmets out to 125 yards with hardball ammo.

Cheapest way to shoot something in my humble opinion.
