At the end of last season I encountered difficulty turning my boat in one direction. So I had my brother in law observe the engine under power with cover up. The problem was the engine (OMC 120hp 2.5L four cylinder) was rocking to one side. Upon further inspection, I determined the root cause was the wood around the engine mounting bolts was stripped out. I should mention the engine bolts are hex head lag bolts which thread into wood stringers. The boat is in great shape and the stringers do not appear to be rotten. I am speculating the wood surrounding the threads pulled free because the bolts were overtightened at some point.
I am now trying to determine what the best fix would be for this issue. I am hoping there is some sort of over sized insert or expanding anchor which can be installed into the stringer. I certainly am not interested in any kind of major repair to the stringer.
All advice is greatly appreciated.
