17' trophy bass and ski boat - hp rating

hi,

just bought a 1985 17' bayliner trophy bass and ski boat with force 85hp. searching around and hoping for confirmation (please) that this boat will take max 125 hp engine?

the guy I bought it from told me 125hp and I've seen various ads/postings describing 125hp but I think it must have been a different model. This is pretty shallow draft and I think 125 WOULD be alot of power.

In the meantime, I removed the cupholder he had by the throttle and see a US Coast guard sticker that says max 4 passengers and max 90 hp!

I was going to switch over to one of my older (2001) yamaha 100 hp four-strokes. They are now sold as 90s and dealer says there is no change to the motor(s),... so is it a 90 or a 100 hp? Can't say it would make much difference. (?)

85 hp to 90/100.

You could conceivably lose performance due to the extra weight in the stern. Your Force weighs 250# (no power tilt & trim) or 275# (with power tilt & trim). I'll bet that Yammie 4-stroke weighs about 100# more.
