1708 shinney side up?

I am getting ready to do some fiberglass, just wondering which side goes up the shinney side or the dull side? Its 1708 I'm using. Thanks

Chopped strand mat side down or towards the piece you are glassing. Cloth side up.

I have reversed it for the final layup layer.....or use CSM....or finish cloth.... depending on your application and desire for a clean, smooth finish. You were givin the advice I use. Good luck.

I was told by a fiberglass retailer that if multiple layers of 1708 are being layed up with epoxy, just use the combo 1708 for the first layer, then laminate 17 oz bi ax on top, no more need for the 8 oz CSM between layers when using epoxy. It will save a few bucks.

Cloth, 'n resin does most all my jobs...

What is the application ?

Full lams or just repairs..

For full lams ( like stringers or trans ) shiney side up.

For small repairs I like to Mat first then shiney down.

Epoxy does take away some of the variables associated with Poly. If I was a beginner....or smart.. (not either)...I would use epoxy. I consider Poly lay-up mostly chemestry. Epoxy tends to have some leeway in your lay-up schedule.... and highly recommended. Good luck.

Yes .. I agree..

However it would also depend on the application..

If your end finish is going to be paint then by all means use whatever you want.

However..if your going to do a Gel repair (which the OP has not indicated yet) then Epoxy is kinda not the right way to go.

I would settle for some pics or some further information from the OP

Regardless of the amount of prepwork performed, I've never had a whole lot of success with polyester resin and SMC. Poly just doesn't stick as well to SMC. Epoxy is a little more expensive and unless you have a boat store nearby, you're stuck ordering it online...which is what I have to do. Most of my composite work is done on stand up jetskis that are constantly abused and all my repairs with epoxy hold up great. All my repairs with poly last a couple rides.

As for the original question... I like to put the mat side down first but I like putting the last layer mat side up. I think it's easier to sand the mat side smooth when it's all cured.
