I have a 175 evinrude 1989 engine that runs good. The voltage regulator is bad. I cannot get the flywheel off. we've drilled new puller holes and retapped them twice. they keep ripping out. The origional holes have a tap broken in one hole. My mechanic said maybe cutting or burning the wheel off is the next step. Any idea's?

Don't even think about heating the flywheel. May destroy you main bearings. I had a similar issue with mine. Here is what to do:

Get a BIG gear puller, BIG one. I had to use one with a 3/4" shaft and a catch (for the flywheel teeth) over 1/2" long. Brute force was the answer. I never drilled a single hole in the flywheel. Soaked the shaft and splines in WD40 for 2-3 days. Good luck.

I'll second that post. Let the thing sit lubed up with penetrating oil for a couple of days, then rent the biggest puller you can find (three or four arms -- looks like a spider. The arms fit around the perimeter of the flywheel.) Keep rapping on it and tightening down. Eventually, it will pop (usually scares the heck out of me when they do, because I always figure I busted something with all the force).
