175 johnson repowering??

I found a brandnew 91 175 faststrike with everthing ready to bolt on.seeing this is a brandnew motor that has never been touched what do i need to do to get it ready?
should i put something in the cylinders or do they come with a film or something ?i was just wondering because if thing hasnt been touched since 91 seems i would need to do something to make sure nothings stuckthanks for the info.
any other helpful words of advise or tricks?
i'll be asking alot more questions in the future im going to try to do this myself with a friend thats done it a few times.

If it has been sitting that long and never run except for the test run at the factory; do a complete inspection: check all hoses and wires. Make sure fuel is getting to the carbs and the floats aren't stuck. I would remove the spark plugs and spray some seafoam or WD40 in each cylinder and manually turn the crankshaft.

It might be stuck at first because the water pump impeller has been sitting for so long. It would be prudent to change the water pump impeller as well since it has surely molded permanently to the shape of the impeller cup and won't be as effective as a new one and will be more likely to fail.

I would also change the lower unit oil.

I think that you should take it through the Break-In Procedure in your service manual just as you would any other new or rebuilt engine.

If you don't have a manual, post here and someone can summarize for you.

Use TCW-3 oil on the cylinders/pistons. in my opinion, WD40 is in no way adequate lubrication.

If it were me, I'd clean the carbs - regardless if it wasn't really run or not. Might not hurt to put a few (few) drops of 50:1 oil in the cylinders and roll it over by hand.

One of the things I do when installing a powerhead is to spin it over with the starter without the plugs in it just before starting it. That does a couple of things -- first, I can visually verify each cylinder is getting fuel. If it's getting fuel, it's getting oil. Once I know it's getting oil, I know I won't be firing up on a dry cylinder.

Just make sure to pull the kill switch. Not good to have spraying gas and loose spark.

And im really thinking about when money permits doing something with what i have now Dale.you think we can make a beast out of it?

oh ya and were can i find a maual to read up on.i got a siloas that im going to read,been on all the repair forums and just trying to learn and read to get some know how.

I'd strongly suggest an OE manual. I think you'll find it pays for itself when you start getting into rebuilding the original one.
