I have a Sugar Sand Tango with a Mercury XR2 175 hp sportjet.
It has been sitting for over a year.

When i try to start her the starter solenoid clicks but nothing else happens.
If I bridge the contacts - the same. The battery is at full charge and of course the water is connected.

So the question is whether I need a new starter or is there something else
that I should know about and or check.

The oil cap with sensor had deteriorated and broken, so I removed the sensor lead. other than that it is as it should be.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry I know nothing about this motor. I have ordered a manual which is on it's way, but if ,in the meanwhile, you have any suggestions, no matter how obvious they may seem to you, please let me know!!

The starter should be cleaned. My bet the commutator is dirty you may need brushes also. As for your motor you'll to pull the carbs and clean and rebuild.
Gas standing that long would have gummed up the carbs. Even if it did run you run the risk of running lean on one or more carbs and that would be bad for your motor. You'll need your book and carb kits. If you want to take the starter to a good auto electric shop they can fix up your starter for you.

Look at your filters. check your fuel lines and you fuel tank for old gas get rid of it clean everything.

Last you need to change the lube in the jet gearbox.

I hope this helps you out

Thanks a lot for the reply. Hopefully I'll get the manual before the weekend
and will get to work.

And really thanks again for the suggestions.
