Re: 18 hp evinrude popping out of gear.
Hi Propwash,
Parts aren't cheap, but with proper use they'll last a long time. As Jim pointed out, this is usually caused by "easing" the shifter into gear, or shifting at a high throttle setting. Always shift at lowest possible idle and always shift firmly and quickly.
If the forward gear isn't too crowned over, simply replacing the clutch dog should fix the problem. Last one I did I think the clutch dog ran about $40-$50. Might be able to shop around a bit - make sure you have your motor's model number with you, as there were some changes to the units on the 18s and not all clutch dogs will go with all propshafts.
Also, if you have any evidence of water intrusion (milky oil, water in the oil, etc.) then this is a good time to reseal the unig. Assuming all else is good you can have a good unit for under $100.00 if you do the work yourself. Get yourself some PermaTex gasket maker, too to reseal the gearcase halves...
- Scott
