Clutch dog and probably the forward gear will need to be replaced. They become rounded over time, especially if shifting is done slowly/gently. Some OMC gearcases allow swapping forward and reverse gears and reversing the clutch dog, which will improve the forard performance, but move the problem to reverse operation. Much cheaper though.

Is it a do-it-yourself job and how well are these parts priced.

propwash.

Hi Propwash,
Parts aren't cheap, but with proper use they'll last a long time. As Jim pointed out, this is usually caused by "easing" the shifter into gear, or shifting at a high throttle setting. Always shift at lowest possible idle and always shift firmly and quickly.
If the forward gear isn't too crowned over, simply replacing the clutch dog should fix the problem. Last one I did I think the clutch dog ran about $40-$50. Might be able to shop around a bit - make sure you have your motor's model number with you, as there were some changes to the units on the 18s and not all clutch dogs will go with all propshafts.
Also, if you have any evidence of water intrusion (milky oil, water in the oil, etc.) then this is a good time to reseal the unig. Assuming all else is good you can have a good unit for under $100.00 if you do the work yourself. Get yourself some PermaTex gasket maker, too to reseal the gearcase halves...
- Scott

Thanks guy's,
It does'nt sound like too bad of a job,i think i know now how this problem came about-once in a while i would bump the shift lever into gear while getting ready to dump her in the water and if i put it back into nuetral and then start it the thing would just scream,so i would pop it into gear and it would settle it back down but boy she was a harsh engagement.
going into gear and then back to nuetral must have been doing something to the throttle or idle control i'm assuming, and it wasn't even running.
so i'll have to figure out that problem too i guess.
propwash.
