Okay, I'll probably really get it for this one. Recently I had my 9.9 Evinrude stolen. (Tip: Record you serial #'s)
Turns out I can get an 18 hp Evinrude - not sure on the year - for next to nothing. My 14' aluminum v-hull is rated for 16. How terrible would it be to hang that 18 on the back of it?

Re: 18 hp Evinrude

Other than being illegal probably nothing. A friend of mine had a 14' Alumacraft (back when they were a 1 piece rounded hull) and had a 33 Johnson on it. Ran out real good with remotes.

Besides, at that low a hp, I doubt that anyone would bother you like they would if you were in a big rig and buzzed someone fishing at 65 mph. Grin

Re: 18 hp Evinrude

Thanks Mark,
I realize it would be illegal, and also know that ignorance is no excuse. I've had a safety inspection once while pulling out and been checked on crappie legnths once. Both were very pleasant expereinces. Neither time did they look at the capacity plate. (probably because I was only runnin' a 9.9) I always try to be the most respectful and cautious boater on the water, as I usually have my 9 year old or 6 year old on board.

Re: 18 hp Evinrude

Consider this.... depending on the age of the boat and motor....

I have a 1963 starcraft rated for 20 hp and have an 18 hp evinrude on it.... a 1967 18hp which was rated at the powerhead and not the prop. If i put a new 20 hp on it it should fly because they are rated at the prop. If you put an 18 on a boat rated for 16 you are about 10% over or are you? Depends on the motor and year. The newer 4 strokes are also heavier and I wonder if that counts. I have seen some new (2006) Sundance boats that are rated by weight on the transom no mention of HP.
