Just got an Evinrude 1968 18 hp fastwin Ser# 18802. She starts on second or third pull but wont run long. What should I do to her . Pumps water like a new one, great compression and sounds good. should I tear into the carb and rebuild it first or start with the coils maybe . Just wanted some advice.
Thanks,
Kenny

Re: 18 hp fastwin

check and see if you get a good blue spark at 3/8"-7/16" and check condition of the plugs.

if spark is good i would clean/rebuild the carb.

there is an thread on cleaning and a thread on adjustments in the frequently askede questions.

i have a '68 18hp evinrude and you can almost point at it sand it will start.

I'd also try taking the fuel line off the carb and seeing if the fuel pump is pulsing fuel when you try to crank it. Definitely check spark with a tester and if good, rebuild your carb and set your idle jet properly.

Fastwin Carbs are easy to rebuild. I would first check the gasket under the carb ....... make sure its tight...... you could have a leak.

If not I would rebuild the carbs AND do the electronics.

I am running a 1967 Fastwin 18 great motor :)
