18 HP Johnson wont go in foward

Finally got my 1965 18 HP Johnson cranked today. Second time trying to start it, got it started this time, but it would only go in reverse. The gear shifter would shift into what should be foward, but the boat wouldnt go foward. Reverse and neutral both worked, but no foward...any advice?

does it run off of a control box. if so it might be out of adjustment.

It sounds like you need to check your forward gear….<br /><br />To check your forward gear, you have to remove the bearing carrier.<br /><br />By the way were there any metal particles in the lower unit when u drained it.
