Have any of you guys ever messed with the OMC upgrade kit 0390974? It comes with both forward and reverse gears, a three lug instead of the OE two lug clutch dog, bearings, and spaghetti seal. I reworked my lower unit back in 2012 and had my gears and dog machined, but alas it has rounded off again. When I rebuild I am going to recheck my upper shift linkage adjustment, but if any of y'all have any experience with this kit it would be greatly appreciated.

That kit is very pricey if available.-----------Much better to find a donor motor , not uncommon to find them for $100 or less.-------Make sure linkages on motor are not worn and properly adjusted.

That's what I thought too, but I can do a full swap on the kit for about $300 cheaper than going back with factory equipment. Riddle me that one.

Have never heard of a 3 lug clutch dog for an 18. Interesting.

I beleive that this is the setup for the commercial motor 25 HP of the same vintage. My outboard dealer says these are great for these motors, but doesnt sell too many due to the cost.
