Yea, I saw that minkuni fuel pump and I thought it looked good. Do you have the part number that is best suited for my old 25?

noelfm, I am the guy that makes adapter plates. If you are lucky enough to have a bypass cover like #11 in this picture, you are all set and don't need an adapter. Just drill and tap the holes.

Use this fuel pump. http://www.iboats.com/Sierra_18_735...4693672--**********.275978128--view_id.174139

Send me a PM if you need any more guidance.

Well, gentlemen, I finally got her fixed and it took me near a century to figure out how to post images (I had to go to another website!) and hope they will attach. I managed to make a video of the '57 running, but it would have taken about 1 hr to download... I drilled a hole in the bypass cover plate, tapped a thread, screwed in fitting, drilled a hole next to the carb & placed the Mikuni pump there. Took me an hour to figure out where to place the pump because of the vac being in the middle, it tended to pinch against the engine cover. Another 3 hours to figure the routing of vac & gas lines but it all worked perfect. Thanks for the help, again.

Ode to IBoats

The word was spread, the deed is done, she putters along fine, fuel pump'n th'ough er lines. So I invoke ye sailors, raise ye keels and toast with me to the IBoats mates; wish not swampwater in your dealer's glass, envy, existence and greed may cloud 'is view but ye gallant sailors see true and true; ye sound advice I'd followed through, alas! The impossible accomplished against all odds --- 'n dealers' misgivins too...

I battled the Internet snake and sent pixels galore flying tho cyberspace o' course, me two left thumbs 'n other joint limbs 'casionally gettin'n the way.

By my lonesome known I'd never git er done, thanks to ye lads me ship now runs so I raise me mug and a swoosh of ale (or two) in praise of ye fine sailors from IBoats bound, may ye find calm seas 'n warm breezes to your bow!

That'll work. One thing I've noticed on my 57 E-rude BigTwin 35 hp with a mikuni fuel pump installed...it takes longer for the bulb to pump up and get firm than on my other motor with a stock OMC fuel pump. Even then, the bulb still feels kinda mushy...runs and pumps fine though.

Sorry bout the quality of the photos, I know they show kinda blurry; it's not a phone but a real camera. Problem is it's not a real photographer taking the shots! I've ALWAYS had problems with digital media and Inet.

Bottom line is, she starts on the first pull (always) idles well and accelerates smoothly. I really can't believe how lucky I've been with the quality of this outboard. Now I'm on the prowl for s'more...

I have a just as lousy 50 second video clip of the '57 running, but no matter how hard I try, I can't attach it to a message; not even if I go to photobucket.com. Anybody out there know how to download a videoclip?

P.S. Everybody out there, thanks for the advice & keep up the good work. One last thing: Yeah, I've experienced the same "mushiness" issue with the Mikuni pump/primer bulb, but after she starts, it's smooth sailing- No complaints here!

Thanks for the reply, I'll give'er a try (but no promises) and glad you'll be joining the world of '57 Olfoggies; again, I'm still stupefied by how smooth this ol girl starts and runs. Hope to share this with you soon.

Well I did not get it. It was on craigs list 50 bucks But he never returned my email and he posted it sold. easy come and go. I know what you mean about how well these old motors run. My 54 3-hp and 64 5.5-hp Johnsons both run great. they're on you tube so I could show a friend.that was the easiest way I could find. hope we see yours soon. good luck

Sorry to hear the deal fell through but don't lose heart, there are plenty of them around.

Recently I saw an ad in a local paper for my same motor ('57 18HP). I called the guy, asked if it started and would shift. He said: "Yes". When asking for directions to his house, he confessed that although it started, the lower unit was locked in reverse. I lost interest because I'm not sure I can open the lower unit up, disassemble & fix without special tools. So, keep your hopes up, when you least expect it, another one will pop up.

With the guy's in this forum's help you can do anything to a boat or motor. They are awsome.

Re: 18HP '57 Johnson HELP! - A Matter of Pride!

I aquired my first outboard motor ever about a year and a half ago and it was a 1957 7.5 hp Evinrude! I love that little motor! I just finished replacing the impeller and rebuilding the carburator.

This summer, I bought a 1962 10 hp Evinrude and that thing has great power! I'd like to get my hands on an 18 hp some time. I bet it is a beast!

The 18's are awesome. Great power/weight ratio as they only weigh about 10# more than the 10. I run them every summer.

And as for the locked up lower, quite often it's as simple as someone removing the shifter screw and not getting it back in properly or other easy LU fix. They are very easy to take apart and put back together.

I agree. After taking apart the lower units on my 2 '59 18HP motors, they are easy to take apart and put together. I am almost on the lookout for motors with lower unit issues because I know what goes on in there now. Just plan to replace the seals on them if you take them apart, no questions asked.

Re: 18HP '57 Johnson HELP! - A Matter of Pride!

Would you mind showing me a picture of The Black Pearl? I enjoy fishing a lot but my wife doesn't like the bassboat set up. She said would consider accompanying me if I had something with a canopy on it (like a pontoon boat). Did you buy the pontoons for your boat or did you use existing ones from another? I am interested also in a short history on how you went about with your project boat; if you don't mind. Thanks!

P.S. I'll make sure to call the guy with the locked-up lower unit again to see if he still has the motor - let you know.

You should call the guy with the locked up lower. No guarantees, but quite often they are not hard to fix, and parts are available. Offer him less though!
