Hi,
I just purchased a used boat with a 72 evinrude 18 hp. It has been sitting sitting for qt least 15 years. I have never opened up the lower end to an outboard until this one. Before I start replacing g stuff, based on the looks of the pictures, is it worth rebuilding? The gear oil was grayish like water had been in it and there is all sorts of build up of dirt and oul in the lower end.
Any advice is much appreciated. 20210620_103918.jpg

Easy job.----No special tools required.----Pay attention to the pin to locate the forward bushing for proper lubrication.

Thanks. It doesn't seem hard after watching a few videos, I just wasn't sure if there was anything that might conclude that something is toast in the bottom end. The previous owner had passed away so there is no history except that it use to run 15 years ago. Should I just replace every peice in the bottom end?

Thanks again,
David

???-----No , you would be shocked at what ----" every piece " ----Would cost.-----Take apart / inspect then decide.----Used lower units are plentiful in some areas.

Sorry I should be a little more clear. More so every o-ring and seal along with the impeller. I wouldn't buy new prop, and shaft and what not. Sorry to be vague on that.
Thanks

It's actually an easy job. Definitely a Winter job for a novice but I did a total rebuild on my late Father's 1971 18Hp Fastwin. Took me 3 years to build up the courage to do. Pretty straight forward YouTube is great. good Luck if you proceed

ok it is filthy... but in gear...does it turn the prop if you turn the drive shaft or... is it totally stuck solid with rust

if it turns refill with oil turn the drive shaft with a drill for 5 minutes or so (in gear F N and R )

dump the oil and inspect for metal chips, rusty looking tint etc.... if ok
refill with oil change impeller and try the motor if you feel uneasy cracking open the GC.

that is what I would do if you are not mechanically inclined. Have you done the carb ??

best stand for working on the gearcase is probably a workmate of whatever vintage. Drained gearcase and lower unit clamped upside down for easy access. Pinion pin comes out for removal of the lower part of the "clamshell".
