Here's a 1 min video. She was running good then....not. She was smoking hot when it quit too. Also, noticed fuel or water leaking from hole in front bottom of carb. Did I forget a screw or something. It was pouring out of the opening right in center of the pic. Thermostat housing was pretty dry, but thermostat is working, put in boiling water and it did open.
Any ideas?


Sorry the video just ended abruptly. Was just surprised that the motor just quit like that.

Just looked at a carb diagram and it does look like i forgot a screw, washer and orifice plug. How the heck did I do that. Guess I'll order them. So, that would've been fuel leaking out the front of the carb, right? Would that cause the motor to just quit like that and be smoking hot? Or, is that a seperate problem?

How the heck did it even run at all! lol

Did you remove the high speed jet (orifice), or just the cover bolt for it?

I couldn't see in the video, was it pumping water?

When I got it back to the dock I took off the cowl and started it again. That's when I noticed the fuel coming out the front/bottom of the carb. According to this diagram, http://www.*****************/parts/...202R&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Carburetor I need parts 39,45 & 46. I'm assuming it's NOT pumping water. But, why would that be?

Okay....been there done that....... look carefully in the engine cowling.....it might be laying in there. I have had that exact screw rattle out because I did not want to risk over tightening it. Yes it will run w/o it but not good.

OK, but why did it just quit like that in the video? It was running great. And, when it did, it was smoking hot!! I don't get it. I've restored this motor, top to bottom including water pump impeller, etc. I've even changed it over to electric start, which works great. Why would it run hot? Or would that orifce plug and screw missing cause that, I hope.

WOW! Good call Bob_VT. I went out there and looked with a flashlight and found the screw and washer. Now, according to this diagram, http://www.*****************/parts/...202R&manufacturer=Evinrude&section=Carburetor, there should also be an oriface plug, #45, in that hole. Do you think that rattled out too? And should I order a new one? Or do you think it's still in there and I just need to replace screw and washer? Thanks a lot!!

Check to make sure the high speed jet is still not in the carb. You don't want to double up on them. Could be just the plug and the washer fell out.

I can't see in there very well. When you say plug and washer, you mean the screw and washer, right.

On marine engine.com if you punch in model #18202r and look at the carb diagram I'm concerned about part#45. I found the washer and screw, #39 & 46, just wondering about #45. Also, would that missing cause the motor to quit and be so hot?

Ok I used my daughters little makeup mirror and looked in and I do believe the jet is still in there. I just put the screw and washer back in. Now, why was it so hot and smoking? It smelled hot.

There is no way in heck you could run like you did without the jet in there. It has to be in there. Requires a special tool to remove, so Im assuming you left it in for the carb rebuild. It has nothing to do with the overheat. 2 separate issues here.

Now, when you first started up, was it pumping water. Should have been the first thing you looked for. Those 18s pump like a hose, you would know one way or another. Water should have been gushing out of the exhaust relief on the back of the leg.

If not, either the key was forgotten to drive the impeller (you did forget the high speed jet plug ), the impeller was aftermarket and failed (seen that many times), the water tube is pinched in the grommet on top of the impeller housing, there is a restriction in the circuit, etc...

I would pull off the t stat cover and t stat assembly, and run the motor. Water should be spurting up out of there, if not, time to drop the gearcase.

Ok great. If it should be spitting a lot of water, it's not. I put my hand in front of exhaust and it gets a little moist, but not wet. So I should remove the lower unit again and recheck everything. I hope running it that 1 minute didn't ruin it. What do u think?

You can always re check compression and see where you are at. that is what I would do first.

Try first running without t stat and cover on before dropping the lower to see if you are getting water to that point. If not, then drop the lower.

Did you check compression before all of this as a baseline? If not, always good to do so. You want a baseline for future issues like this, plus always good to do to see general health of powerhead before putting money into it.

Where are you running this mtr ?? The water level should be 4" above the impeller.
