19' Grumman squareback

so.... there seems to be varying opinions on what HP to use on my 19' Grumman squareback.I've been told 2 hp is plenty, and other's say the 6hp is the better choice if I'm loaded .The canoe will have 3 people in it, and possably be carrying moose quarters.I understand the river is narrow in places with a current of up to 3 or 4 knots, [ no rapids] and broadens out into slower sections.I'll be going downstream in the morning,then returning to camp later, with or without the moose.

sorry about that- I;ve never had a freighter canoe with an out board before- always had 16' regular canoes, just 2 people, no gear and just paddled .I'm assuming from what I ve heard that 2 hp is adequite for lakes, but the 6 is better for a fully loaded canoe going up a river.I also assume that if I did get a 6, I'd have to be careful with it if it was empty.But again- I have no experiance with this setup.A month from now I should be home again and have a better idea on what the best set up is.

I have run a Grumman sport canoe (same as yours) with a 6 Johnson for more hours than I care to remember.<br /><br />The 6 is a very good match for it.

well, I am in the process of trying to get the 6hp evinrude off the kicker bracket where it is frozen on due to the salt water.So far the bolts are winning, not us.If we do get it off without breaking it, we'll take it to the shop for a look over.We haven't actually run it for several years, but it turns over ok when you pull the starting cord.We'll put new plugs in, change the bottom end oil and put a new water pump in and see if it goes.I'd probably spring for a 4 or 6 hp 4 stoke Yamaha but will have to see if we can get the old Evinrude going first.Not too sure what the moose meat is going to work out per lb, but with what I've spent so far filet de mignon looks cheap...
