I bought this boat from a freind for $250:D, supposedly it only need minor repair. Im trying to get the engine started and want to start with the basics so i have some questions that im hopeing you guys can answer.

BTW i do not know any specific info on the thing yet like model or year sorry have not gotten the paperwork yet.

1. What is the firing order?
2. Do you need a special coil or just any automotive coil, i have an accell coil on it now but somebody said i need a marine coil?
3. Is there any good websites that offer good info on marine engine or specificly this one? And specificly the electrical stuff that i NEED to start the engine.
4.Any other info that a newbie might need to know about this boat?

PS if i did it right i also included 3 pictures that i took with my phone. Maybe you guys can tell me some info using them?

Thanks in advance for any info you might have.

If it turns over do a compression test to see if it is up to snuff. Looks like the intake manifold is rusted also, maybe uncovered outside for a while. If so maybe got some water down carb throat. Outdrive looks like a OMC Stringer. If I remember right Ford exhaust parts are hard to come by. Anything electrical for the engine should be Coast Guard approved. As far as a site you are on it this is an amazing forum for your questios you will not be led astray. GL to you and Welcome to Iboats!!!!

The distributer in the engine is a mallory 3755101 H, is this the right distributer for this engine, even though i know it is not a "marine" dist.

Firing order depends on HP rating. MOST marine 302s have a 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 order, although the 175hp OMC had 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 order. Since all coils are sealed, no difference whether marine or auto, what does matter is if you need external resisted type or internal resisted.

Is there any way to know for SURE, which firing order to use? I have tried both but no start yet. If i knew for sure which one it was i could set that and move on.

Tom, You can download the manual for your drive set-up from the Adults Only section at the top of this forum page for free. If the boat has been sitting awhile you might want to use a fresh source of fuel to get her going.Does it have a safety lanyard at the helm or controls that needs to be plugged in? Good luck. You need fuel, spark and compression. Which one(s) are you missing?

I LOVE these OMC threads...where's my popcorn???

Get the valve covers off, turn the engine untill piston # 1 is in compression stroke @TDC, turn the engine by hand (ratch) and follow the first next step in valve closing sequence (cylinder # 3 or # 5 have their valves both closed) If cylinder 3 is next than you have a 351 cam and corresponding firing order (see above post) When #5 then you have the 302 cam.
Good luck!

Remember Fords number their cylinders differently than GM:

Firewall
4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5
Front bumper

This has screwed up many a person before.

Well you can add me to that list :D

But the engine still did not start although it seemed to want to. I am wondering if maybe they got the #1 spark plug wrong. I am gonna make sure which one is the number one on the next nice day and then redo the firing order again. Its easy when your replace a dist. to get the number one wrong if your not careful.

Also remember a small block Ford rotor turns counter clockwise compared to a small block Chevrolet that turns clockwise...
