Stop-----Could be a loose wire on the shift switch.--------First check and see if there is voltage going to the reverse electro magnet.-----Blue wire going into the lower unit.----Do not compare work on this thing to an outboard.-----Unless you have experience with lower unit on a 66 / 67 / 68 model 100 HP Johnson / Evinrude.----If there is voltage going to reverse magnet then it could be broken tab on the reverse drive spring.

Also this unit is completely new to me part of the big reason I didnt drop it yet so any info you want to share about any of this stern drive is greatly appreciated but I'm still set on hoarding extra parts lol especially if they are getting harder to find I hope to keep this boat as close to it is nowas possible except possibly adding a live well

Look at picture # 929.3 just above the tilt motor, slide the protective tubes to expose the shift wires, blue for back up and green for go. With the key on and shifted to reverse you should have 12 v on the blue wire. If no voltage go to the shift control. Also to test the magnets in the lower gear housing disconnect the knife connectors and with an ohm meter each wire should read 4.5-6.5 resistance. You could have any of the following, shift switch, broken wire in the harness, shift wire, reverse coil or wire and a broken shift spring. Try this first before doing anything.

Thank you that info is really helpful I've been trying to get ahold of a service manual with no luck so far so that's extremely helpful and again thank you
