Hey guys, new to the forum. Getting really tired of cleaning the points everytime i let the boat sit a while. I'm also having a problem after the engine warms (say 20-30 minutes of tubing) say we'll be sitting there getting the next person ready, or tying the tube down. The engine will be idling, and then it'll just start to chug and stall. When we try to restart, it will act like the starter has no power to it, just a very slow crank. The battery is new, the cables are a year old 1/0 gauge (that cured the problem for one season), so we have to let it sit and cool for about 10-20 minutes with the hatch open, it will eventually start, but will not go WOT without a surging feeling. Also while underway, if i try to adjust the trim it sounds like it bogs the motor down. I'm really leaning towards it having ignition problems, and have no idea why the trim would effect how the engine runs.
my plan is to find an electronic ignition for it, and reset the timing (backing it off a degree or two also).

Sorry for the book ya'll. but hopefully someone will be able to help me out and point me in the direction of finding the parts i need! Thanks!

Re: 190MR Electronic ignition?

what are you cleaning off of the points?
oil?, dist driveshaft seal is leaking.
water/corrosion? dist cap seal is missing or torn, or cap is cracked.

How much alcohol is in your gas, doesn't take much heat to cause vaporlock in the fuel line with the alcohol. check fuel line routing for "hot spots". The surging sounds like the pockets of vapor hitting the carb.

Check the batt ground connection at the motor end, make sure all connections are clean, bright and tight.

get your timing set to the "book", playing with the timing can cause several of your problems....

sounds like you've got several things going on at once, adding the EI at this point will just add to the confusion...

i couldn't tell ya how much alcohol is in the gas, i just fill up with the recommended 89 octane at the gas station. The points just corrode after sitting all winter. A little sand paper usually cleans them up. I'll have to go through all the grounds again i guess. 5 years ago this boat never had a problem, and now it's nothing but a problem.
