1944 Evinrude

Can't find gas cap gasket for my 1944 evinrude fleetwin 7.5 horse model 4443-44507. Runs like a champ but I can't lie it down cause it leaks everywhere. Gas cap is not threaded but is 1/8 turn twist-lock type. Any ideas?

Any chance you could just get some gasket material and make one up? I don't know off-hand where you could buy one to fit...Maybe go to the auto parts store and compare sizes and gaskets on older model caps. You may be able to use one of those gaskets...

This is a tricky one. There is a ring on the cap that accepts the gasket and the difference in diameter between the cap and hole is approx. 3/8". My dad says the old gasket was "floppy" in that it was thin and wide. I may try a giant o-ring but I don't want to have to fight tis cap every time I pull it out or push it in. There are lots of antique outboard parts stores but no one has the cap gasket. Thanks for the reply.

try a piece of bicycle inner tube. cut the outter circle and the inner, then stretch it over the center. seems like they were rubber.

Inner tube will swell and increase in size but then seems to stabilize. I've been fighting this one for a while with a NLA gas cap gasket without resolution yet.
Buna-N would be ideal but I haven't found a good source.

By the way, your motor is actually a 1951/1952 model. There were virtually no outboards built in 1944 due to materials shortages during WWII.

As for the gasket, a thick rubber ring ought to do it. That's what I used on mine... Either an o-ring or a custom cut gasket out of reinforced rubber flat stock. Don't use inner tube rubber as it will distort from the fuel in a hurry and won't seal for long...
