I picked this 46 elgin 3.5 hp. took the carb apart and cleaned it, now the motor will start and run for about 30 to 60 seconds and seems like it runs out of gas. adjusting the mixture does not help, is there a filter in the tank that could be partially plugged? if you let it sit for a min. it will do the same thing, any advise? thanks.

Sure, take the fitting out of the tank. There should be a fine screen on the inside end of it. Also make sure the air vent hole in the gas cap isn't clogged.

Re: 1946 elgin

just wanted to update on this motor, I found a clogged fuel line and I took out the needle and seat, cleaned them and adj. the float. now it runs pretty good. it doesn"t want to idle to good, but I think thats because the compression is kind of low, only 60 psi.,was fun to mess with. I will put it on my boat and see what it does on the lake.

60 psi is not bad on that little motor.Have you tried adjusting the low speed mixture screw?

Most Tillotson model MD carburetors (with a few exceptions) have a slow speed mixture that works backwards. Clockwise is richer and the other way is leaner. Some Elgins are among the exceptions. I don't know which one you have. If the needle when removed is only about 3/4 inch long, it is one of the backwards ones.

thanks I"ll try that, it will slow down to a fast idle, any slower than that and it starts to sneeze, I dont like them tillson carbs, they like to leak gas and are hard to adj.
