Looks like a fun project, keep us posted. I have a couple old ones like that I haven't touched yet. I am curious to see what you need and how hard to find the normal replacement parts are. I assume it has coils, condensors and points?

It looks like it will be a neat little vintage motor. Parts may be a challenge since those motors were discontinued after 1951 in favor of the long production 3. I don?t think that block was used on any motors after the 3.3 horse. The weedless lower unit came around in 1949 and was refined and incorporated in the 3 and 4 through about 1982. The 3.3 actually ended up looking like the later 3 around 1950 because of the tank and shroud. Those late 3.3s actually had a site glass in the front of the gas tank to see your fuel level.

checked the compression and it's got 90 lbs in both cylinders. The motor appears to be complete although many parts are in a box. In looking at the flywheel it looks as if it has the bullet proof coils so we will see. Hope so. I hear they are a bear to work on, but I like a challenge.

the 3.3 are cool little motors. It'll be a fun little project. I have a Zephyr that's just a couple years older. The funny thing is, on these old motors, you usually only have to strip them down and give them a new paint job and they'll run like a top. That's all I did. I may do mine again though. It's number 00066 of the 4404 model and is still in great mechanical shape. I did some modifications to the starter pawl assemblies and made the recoil starter work excellent. I love old outboards they're a lot of fun. I'm about to acquire a 1954 25hp Evinrude in the next couple days, so that will be my next project.

pulled the flywheel last night. It has the old style bullet proof coils in it so that is good. I cleaned the points somewhat and still did not have any spark, but they may not be clean enough yet. I am going to take it all apart and clean it good as they is a lot of dirt in there. I have to put new plug wires on it anyway. Hope to get fire from it, but more than likely will be on the hunt for new condensers.

Yea, I had a '29 Johnson light twin that came to life, after new plug wires. Condensers may likely need replacing too. One thing I love about these old engines, it doesn't take much to bring them back to life. It makes the project all the more fun.

If you're an AOMCI member, you probably know about Engine Blade and Prop. These folks have a decent supply of N.O.S. parts for the old classics, such as this.

Hey Freddyray,
I picked up the mine in late summer. Missing one side cover, previous welding had been done on the transom mount. I've done some repair but haven't run yet. Wish me luck too!

I am told they can be difficult to work on. Right now I am stripping all the old spray paint off then I will do the mechanicals then paint it. I have an artist friend who will do all the fine work on it. My gas gauge is shot, and someone filled in the holes in the tank that feeds it, but I think I can make it look good even though it won't be functional.

Can't help there. My Evinrude manuals have a gap from about 1946-49.

they made these motors from 47-51 so if you have a service manual for a 50 or 51 I'd love a copy. Would pay a reasonable price for one.

took the points completely apart last night. They were a lot dirtier than I thought. Filed them real clean. I am going to put it back together tonight and see if I have spark. If so then on to the carb overhaul.

What do you mean by bullet proof coils? Do the old motors have coils that last longer? I know that all the coils from the 50's-70's self destruct over time. What makes these older ones last forever?

don't know what the change in them was. I do know the older coils lasted forever. The ones from the 50's up until some time did not, but once replaced with the newer style they did last.

good hot blue spark on both cylinders!! cleaned the points after taking them apart. soldered new wired on the coils and set the points. Good hot spark on both wires.
