I am new to restoring vintage motors. I found this 1947 Hiawatha 3hp Gale Model 1H4 (model 25-7956) headed to the scrap yard and bought it for $20. From the picture is it missing a lower cowling? Also, what is the original color? I was unable to find any images to confirm this. Any help on this motor would be appreciated.<p>[/ATTACH]

I don't think that engine was fully enclosed, Cajun. No lower cowling. Compare it to some Gale-made Sea Kings of the period.

Excellent..that is wonderful news. It doesn't look like it was but I wanted to make sure. How hard will it be to find a new prop and decals?

Thanks for the help.

I have it's cousin: An Atlas Royal (Gale made) 5 horse. It looks just like yours. Mine does not have any more cowling than yours and I don't see anywhere where it could be mounted anyway.

Well, tell ya what....it is easy to understand why people think they never had covers since so many people long ago took them off and threw them overboard. However, the fact is they DID have lower covers when new.

Oh Pooh. I thought it didn't have one. I don't really see where a bottom piece would attach. Where would I find this particular piece?

Yeah, I need help too. Picked up a Hiawatha 2 days ago. Looks the same as yours (except mine is grey in color). I was going to change the lower unit oil, BUT, I don't see anything that resembles a fitting like on my other vintage motors from the 60's.

There are a couple of small screws, but don't look like anything that would support unit oil. Any ideas?

Here is the one I just bought. Might help you with the cowl paint. Not sure how many different colors of this motor they made.

There should be a large screw on one side of the gearcase (grease fill) and a small one on the other side (vent). There probably is a third one, water flush. It uses grease for gear lube. The seals are not good enough to hold oil. Most people use Lubriplate 105 "Motor Assembly Grease" from NAPA Auto Parts Stores. Others use "Corn Head Grease" from John Deere farm equipment dealers. The Lubriplate comes in a squeeze tube, corn head doesn't.

Daymon, your motor is a 5hp.

That is awesome. I'm so glad you told me that. I would have loaded it up with 80W gear oil otherwise. I'll go to our local John Deere dealer and grab some of that grease. I was wondering how in the world I was going to get the lower unit filled without a "bleed" cap at the top of it.

There is a screw on the right side (looking at the engine from the back) that looks large enough to fit a small grease hose in, and there is a really small screw on the left side of the unit, but it is super small.

Do you happen to know the "year" on mine as well? The person I bought it from said it was from the 40's but it doesn't look quite that old. Couldn't find a plate on it anywhere that would indicate a year/make/model.

They haven't started it in 45 years. I pulled lightly on the starter rope and it isn't locked up thankfully.

Thanks again for your input and information regarding this motor.
