picked up a seaking, 5 hp model 54GG-9011. from what i can see it is a 1947. dirty gas tank, needs cleaning and sealing. i have spark and it runs! actually runs pretty good considering the age and it hadn't been run for some years. it is complete, with the cool retro finned covers. its so ugly that its kinda cool. i saved this from the dump. po listed it for free, as he was moving and couldnt take it with him. free is good, but i gave the guy a 20, just because, good karma? it didnt have plugs, and the wires are shot.

pulled the fw, coils look new, points were ok, and the condensers seem to work (she runs).

so lets get to the point,

when i took off the flywheel, the stupid little springs that hold the fingers open on the starter broke. so where can i find them? or what alternatives (modifying some other spring) do i have?

i have no pumping water, i have a spare impeller from a td20 johnson 5hp (if i can find it) are they the same?

carb kit? i think i need to change the carb gaskets, and the primer gasket. any resources? for parts?

looking for a service and parts manual too.

the coils are good, but the wires are toast. do i just pull the wires off the coils? it looks like the wires are soldered to the coil?

sorry for the long post. but it would be nice to get this thing on the water. i have some omc knowledge, but this baby is a little older and different.

thanks a bunch

why is there two adjustments for the carb? is the large dial in front for the low idle circuit, and the screw one on the side cover for high speed?

Lots of questions there. Lets see if I can remember them all.

1. It is a 1945
2. Pawl springs are available but ridiculous priced. Most people make their own from music wire. Post your question on The Antique Outboard Motor Club Website - AOMCI.org "Ask -A-Member forum and somebody probably will post the instructions.
3. Water pump impeller (properly called a "rotor") is part number 550040. No it is not the same as a Johnson. Brian Wilcox makes them. 810-794-7685 before 8 pm (Eastern Time) please. Or email Baron0418@att.net. please note the b must be a capital.
4. All carburetor parts are obsolete. The main needle packing was made of leather. "Regular" needle packings won't last very long because of the constant use for prining, etc. A Mercury float (iboats) can be modified to replace the cork one if it is beyond saving.
5. I can email you a parts list diagram. They weren't very user friendly in those days. PM me your email address. Remind me the model number
6. Absolutely do NOT pull the wires off the coil. That will destroy it. They are soldered on. Easy piece of cake to do if you are experienced at soldering electronics stuff. You can wreck the coils if you are just learning.
7. The main adjustment is the high speed mixture needle. The one on the side is the slow speed mixture adjustment. Very unusual in that it works by holding the throttle shutter part way open.
8. "Different", yes, but there are tons of them around. And easy to revive.
