I can only guess.Pretty sure just the sides come off.It appears there is a screw on the side toward the back.Otherwise perhaps some sort of latch or screw maybe along the bottom

A 1949 QD-10?? Sweet!! Cool old motors. Yea, you should find several screws on the shroud that attach it to the powerhead. There is a small door on the back, to get to the spark plugs, but the whole thing will come off to service the rest of the engine.

Thanks for the info. There are quite a few screws. I removed them all, but the cover won't come off. It looks like a 2 piece cover. I'm wondering if it's hinged and one side flips up. I'll probably have to remove the primer knob and shaft???

It's funny seeing that PO model there with the more updated looking models:D
Oh well, it only took two more years before the RD came out. The SD model and HD went out soon after too. As I recall, the SD ddidn't even have a water pump.

Anyhow, the picture of the QD will show the two main screws on each side and I believe there is one or two on the front. There could be one on the bottom, on the front side. I seem to recall, that the knobs need to be removed as well. At least the choke will need to be removed.

I would get a service manual from outboardbooks.com.
