Re: 1950's elto 25 hp

I didn't know there were elto's in 1950. If they're evinrude's, I wouldn't want one before 1954 because that was the first year the 1950's 25's had electric start. THe '53 is a bear to pull start (I have a Johnson 25 of that year). The 55 and '54 are good motors, the '55 I believe having a possible lower crank seal common problem. THey have lots of power and speed and run smoothly for me.

Well, I wouldnt say they are common. Ive never had one anyways.

They were very likely built in Ontario in Evinrudes plant here. I have a 25hp Gale Buccaneer, which is the exact same motor, just different decal and trim. I havent gotten around to tuning it yet though.

Are they electric start?

The ELTOS were not made after the war until '49 when the American plants reintroduced them. The Sportster and Speedster, 5 and 12 hp respectively. Then in 1950 they dissapeared again as the Gale lineup was introduced and there was no need for 2 economy brands. (Sorry ELTO fans but that is what they were by then).

We continued making them though up here in the great white north. All the same as the private brands save for the trim and paint.

Very sneaky..... :)
Hightrim, when you say "we", do you mean you actually worked in the plant? If so, that's pretty cool......

LOL no I wish though!

By we, I meant Canadians in general.....we are a tight knit bunch, ;)

They share almost all the parts as the Johnny Rudes, same as the Gales.

Here are 2 of my Gale Buccanneers, a 25hp electric start and a 12 hp tiller. If I took the cowl off it would be identical to the ELTOs.

Also sold in Canada as the Eaton's Viking. Nearly everything on them was used on Johnson and Evinrude motors at one time or another. Except for the different hoods, that is.

Check this website for lots of info. Eaton's Viking Outboard Motor Site

Re: 1950's elto 25 hp

Cool pics. I'd like to have a gale 12hp with a tank in the cowl, and a remote tank hookup.
I just got a motor I'm really proud of recently----a folding ducktwin with 90psi in both cylinders. It wasn' t running when I bought it but is purring nicely now. I didn't even have to reseal the lower unit and there's only a couple of very shallow dings in the tank. This is the first outboard I've bought in quite a while.
---Good call on the cam, BTW!!
