Other than a little caulking and sealing up a few gaps I got the garage inclosed and a window unit installed that I had ..
Might need to get a little larger one but the one I had is making it much more bearable .. Was 93 deg when I turned it on . Now down around 82 after a few hours ..
Got today and tomorrow off from work ... Grand opening parties and I guess we weren’t invited .LOL!
Ohh well would rather be at home anyway ...
So getting back to the boat I am still at odds with getting those bolts out of the outer ribs .
I soaked them in some vinager as Woody suggested and see if that works .. If not I guess I will cut them down epoxy over them and drill new bolt holes ...

Picked up the new SS nuts and bolts today .

When I install these should I use epoxy or 5200 to to seal them up . Being a wood boat and the fact that these bolts should never have to be removed . I’m leaning towards epoxy .
Also , there will be some fairing of of the hull on scrapes and gouges . Should I roll a coat of epoxy to soak into the wood before fairing to insure good adhesion of the fairing ? Or do the fairing first ?
The metal strips were set in a bed of some sort of filler originally . Will epoxy stick to metal ? I am concidering glassing over the strips once install or does that sound like bad idea ..

If ur mixing ur own fairing mix, I like to use it over dry wood, so it wicks up the excess unmixed resin so it doesnt drip on verticles, plus epoxy resin is a pain to sand off the surrounding areas ...but thats just me, either way will work

I like idea of setting ss in epoxy same with those metal runners , id just sand with 36 grit to improve surfa e area grab, rest ill defer to epoxy gurus

Zool I will be mixing my own fairing . Epoxy/Arasil / 3M glass bubbles .
second guessing myself what if I were to glass over the metal strips then over time they start to rust . They are rusted now and will need to be cleaned up before installation .
What if I were to replace them with some oak strips ? Maybe not as strong .
i think the main reason they are there are to protect the hull from the trailer and serve as a keel of sorts to keep it from slipping around in corners while under way .
If not exsposed to air would the metal rust ?

Prime and paint the strips before installation ? Then just set them in a bed of pb ..
Gunna use epoxy paint so it should adhere ..Just thinking out loud ..

I would brush any loose rust, clean and treat with Rustoleum Rust Reformer first. Once encapsulated they should last forever. Rust can't develop without oxygen.

i would not paint the part you are putting in the bedding , the bedding will only have as strong as hold as paint not the metal you are trying to adhere to

Definitely don't paint and then epoxy them on as mickyryan said the bond will only be as good as the paint sticking to the metal The epoxy will seal the metal

Ok epoxy guys , what do you wipe down with before you do any glassing ?
Acetone ? Was thinking on this wood just maybe denatured alcohol ? Or does it matter .
Pre-drilling the new holes now for the metal strakes . Got them all cleaned up and the old bolts ground down and filled .
Looks like I may take next week off so hoping to get the bottom painted by the end of next week .
Probably gunna throw down on a new window unit for the garage . This old small one just ain’t cutting it .

For wiping down sanded wood, you can just use a tack cloth to get rid of the dust.....or a damp rag....or nothing but compressed air like I do

careful when using acetone as some wood will raise hairs i think birch if i recall also use a primer then sand to lock down wood fibers if just painting, not sure about epoxy but i would imagine you will just have to coat and sand.

If it is not too late,..... personally, if it was me I would leave those strips off until all the work is done and then set them in a bedding compound that is not very aggressive (I.e. not 5200).

I also saw a question about “Plastic Wood” fillet, I agree, it does seem to have that problem of dark staining around it, otherwise I don’t see a problem with it on a small trailer kept boat.

I am curious, when I was reviewing your progress it looks like a lot of my comments disappeared and are blank entries. I have also seen that a chunk of my entries on my own rebuild thread are gone,... I wonder if it had somethinv to do with the “upgrade” here last winter.

Thanks for the response Ned . I do have reservations on glassing in those metal strakes . And my concern about using epoxy is that it is a slow process getting all of those bolts set and tightened down before it starts to kick . If not 5200 for a setting compound then what should be used . Would 5200 be good to seal up the bolts from water intrusion ? It looks like it was set originally in the same filler they used on all of the screw holes .

I think I would use something like Sika-flex or Boatlife. Much less aggressive in adhesion.

Did I mess up by sanding what little epoxy I have installed on sealing the joints on the transom and a few screws before removing the blush ?
You just wash it off right ? Flooding all this unsealed wood seems like not a good idea ..idk
