1951 Gale Sea King 5hp- up and running, now what?

I am currently in the process of rebuilding a 1951 Gale Sea King 5.0 hp. (15GG 9015 SN-400805) So far, I've replaced the entire ignition assembly, cleaned out the carb, and now that it runs, I have a few questions. Is there a best option between using 16:1 with traditional SAE30, and 24:1 with The TC W3 Synthetic stuff? I know I can improve on how it runs now, because I mixed synthetic at a 16:1, and it smokes a bit, I'm told a fresh tank of gas will help with that. Also, as I took off the prop and the foot last night to check the water pump impeller and look at the neutral clutch catch, I noticed the bottom of the balanced prong assembly that engages the spring seems to be bent. Is this normal? When I went to put the foot plates back on I got worried also about how you can't see straight up the intake hole: is it meant to be indirect, or did I put it back together wrong? I did line up the three plates in the foot, and the edges line up, but it's kind of unnerving not to see an open intake. I'm worried enough about keeping it cool, since there seems to be water coming out the top of the housing the motor turns on to steer. Whew! This has already been a long haul, and I'll be glad to get it out on the water. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

(sorry this shows up twice, I had accidentally posted it on a cold thread.)

Howdy again, L&D.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Your engine can probably do alright on a 24:1 or 20:1 mix with any TC-W3 outboard oil, but 16:1 would not harm it.

Good ;luck. :)

The clutch trip lever is supposed to be bent. Try straightening it and it will break. Water slobbering out where it isn't supposed to is common. It is also harmless. I really don't follow you on the "intake plates". But you probably are worrying about it too much.

Gale factory service manual says 24:1. That was with old 30 weight oil. TC-W3 oil is light years better.

Thanks for all the help! I quit worrying about those plates and got the LU back on. I still can't get the stubborn thing to go out of gear, but I left the spring catch alone, and tightened the cable. I haven't changed fuel yet, but now when I start it, the engine surges and seems to be running too fast, and doesn't respond well to the throttle until I swing it over to stop. I feel like a monkey with a math problem, tonight. Is this a carb issue maybe? If so, is there a kit part number for a rebuild kit? Thanks again, all.

Re: 1951 Gale Sea King 5hp- up and running, now what?

Hey guys, I finally got some time to get back to my boat. I cleaned the carb and reseated it, and followed manual instructions for setting high and low speed screws. When I start it now, though, it kicks and bucks like it wants to die. I've checked the impeller, and it's old but moving water okay. I'm wondering if I might have boogered up one of the reed valves, maybe. I've been tearing my hair out over this. Any suggestions?

You need to clean and resynch the carb with the throttle. acmeoutboards.com has a manual/guide for your Sea King.
