I have aquired a 1951 mercury super 10 hurricane. I have the entire motor stripped down. I have found almost everything i am going to need to restore this motor but there are a few things i was wondering if someone could help me find. The motor is missing the lower cowl which, I have learned through research, is not unusual. I am also missing the recoil starter. The Magneto cover is cracked and everything inside the mag looks pretty rough. I found some of the parts but i was wondering if there is anyone that sells the whole thing. All of the parts i found were on www.oldmercs.com. If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated. Thanks

If you can't find the parts you need by placing a free ad on aomci.org's classified section of their website, it's very unlikely that the parts can be found. You should really try placing an ad, if you already haven't. The guys there, from my experience, are always more than fair, pack stuff safely, and overall just super helpful folks. Have you been to their site??

The lower cowlings are not rare, but hardly common. There was a guy awhile back making very nice fiberglass replacements, that once painted, passed the 2-foot test. He might still be making them - an ad on the AOMCI site might flush him out.

I'm guessing you have the Bendix-Scintilla magneto with the plastic cap. I've had mixed success with those mags. New coils are available, as are condensers. However, the points are NLA, so you'll have to either dig up some NOS points somewhere or clean up the ones you have as best you can. Again, an ad on the AOMCI site should land you the coils and condensers. The coils are NOT cheap, but are worth the investment.

I have a KG7 that I've run quite a bit on my 12-foot DuraNautic and it is a ROCKETSHIP! Make sure the friction screw on the clamp brackets is snug as you want the motor to turn with a bit of resistance - it can get away from you! Flip your ballcap around and hold on!
