I've got to thinking about it and I'll have to agree with Wayne. It sounds like your carb has something stopped up. Now, you know your motor as far as I know has no choke. there is just a little primer knob on it that squirts gas just like Wayne described. Now, here's an idea. That primer knob is also connected via a lever/wire to the high speed needle valve. Have you tried disconnecting the primer knob lever/wire from the high speed needle on the bottom of the carb and adjusting it with the motor running to see if you can pick up some rpm's? I remember in adjusting my '53 that when the high speed is connected to the knob, there wasn't a lot of travel at all to provide for adjustment. You need to get it close before you connect it or you won't have enough travel in the knob to get the high speed adjusted fully.
Maybe this could be your problem.
