I recently got a old outboard motor and have found very little information on it. Its a TN-28 model, and the serial number is 969206. It was found on the interstate and looks to be in running order, other than the damage it sustained from falling off someones boat. The top motor cover is gone, along with the pull/recoiler. Where would i go about finding something like this? Is ther any other models that would fit it, such as a 3hp cover fitting my 5hp model? Thanks for any info and Pictures would be great too.

Do you think a 3hp cover and pull will fit the 5hp model? They look the same, but i dont know about size.

Hi Verotik
I don't think it will fit. Because your tn28 model has a neutral clutch lever. Are you missing the tank, (top cover)? Or is it the shroud under the tank. Dosen't really matter there are a bunch of these litte motors around. I get most of mine donated or next to it. They are pretty nice, your model is one of the better to have (in my opinion) because of the clutch and the more modern ignition system. Just start snooping around for parts, and you'll be up to your ears in them fairly quick.

Hi Verotik,
Alcan's right. Those TN-series motors are quite common. There were several variations on that motor (TN-25 through TN-28) with each version improving some small item. The good point about that is that there is a lot of parts interchangeability between the models, particularly with shrouds, tanks, etc. Johnson made a LOT of them and a great many of them have survived so parts are plentiful if you look around a bit. If you're not careful you might end up with 3 or 4 of them. They're a nice running little motor, too! Quiet with pretty good kick for an old 5hp.
Manuals turn up on eBay all the time for not too much money, or they can be had through any number of links on the Antique Outboard Motor Club's site (www.aomci.org).
- Scott
