Tried to run the motor today. Would only start with a lot of throttle, then die pretty quickly. Couldn't get it to run more then a couple seconds no matter what I did.

Started digging into the carb. Carb was a little dirty and actually still had the original cork float. Removed welch plug and disassembled carb. Currently sitting in carb cleaner. New kit, float, and bowl gasket on the way.

Update!

Rebuilt the carb and got the motor running great in my trash can back in late December. We've had a lot of snow and below freezing weather so it'll probably be spring before I can lake test. I love this motor!

you are not putting that beauty back in the water are you :)
Got a 10 acre lake I run it in occasionally. Not in the river anymore. To the op, Whenever I get an old motor I pretty much start from the top and work my way to the bottom. Coils points condensers plug wires carb rebuild and seal the lower unit. I assume they need everything. It's a hobby for me so I'm not out any labor, just parts.

cc67: That is an absolutely beautiful motor! Someone spray painted my motor green, probably to use on a duck boat at one point. Planning on using some gas and a scotch brite pad to take the spray paint off without lifting the original paint after I get it running. I'll have to come to you for some painting advice when I get to that stage!

It's not the correct color, but its close. We matched it the best we could at the body shop here in town.
