1953 Evinrude Fastwin 15hp Questions

I just picked up a 53 fastwin for pretty cheap. It runs when the choke is out but dies if its pushed back in. It took some effort to get it to start but it finally did. The guy i got it from was of questionable mechanical ability and it likely was stored with fuel in the carb, etc. . . The shaft doesn't swivel easily but does move with pressure, so that needs to be greased. The pee hole doesn't push any water out either.

So my question is, what should I do about the carb, impeller, etc. . . What should I pull apart and what should I check before I think about strapping it to the boat and tearing across the lake? I don't want to make any problems worse by running it before their fixed. Also open to recommendations on where to get parts and such. . .

Any help would be much appreciated, Kelpy

Carburetor is fouled.... Clean and rebuild it, using a complete carb kit.

The water telltale outlet usually gets clogged... clean it with a piece of single strand steel wire before installing a new water pump assy.

The stuck steering swivel.... usually freed by using a hand help propane torch.

Thanks! Looks like I have my work cut out for me. . .

Any idea on where to get a carb kit or a water pump?

Thanks again, Ken

most of the parts you need can be found here on iboats, sierra sells them, and your local uap napa store is a distributer for sierra marine. ( some prefer oe carb kits tho). and read the top secret file at the top of the johnson/evinrude forum.....lotsa good info there.
good luck, and ask questions.....(there is no such thing as a stupid question if you truely dont know the answer!)

Thanks!

So I found the Carb kit and the ignition coil on iboats. Maybe a stupid question but, is there 1 or 2 coils on this engine? Guessing two because its a two cylinder? I see that it/they are cracked and need replaced. Probably the place to start in my troubleshooting because I know they are bad. How do you get the flyweel off? I have the nut off and I don't see anything apparently holding it on still??? I would hit it harder with a hammer like I normally would but given the fact that its an old motor and parts are some what hard to come by I am going to take it easy on this one. . . :)

Thanks, Kelpy

.

this motor does not have a pee hole. all the water will come out the exhaust. It should push a very heavy like garden hose size stream out.

You need a harmonic balance puller to remove the flywheel. It basically attaches with three (#8 hardened) bolts into the small holes in the top of the flywheel, and the large center bolt positioned on the top of the crank. You square it up perfectly and then tighten the center bolt until the flywheel pops. I usually leave the flywheel nut on loosely to keep it from going airborne when it pops.

Does the flow come out of number 1 or 2? location. . . As fast as the motor got warm when I fired it up today I am guessing that it is not circulating water. . . but help in finding out where the water intake is supposed to be and where the outlet is will help my cause. . . On my 7.5hp fleetwin it comes out of the number 1 spot and this is what I was expecting. . .

Thanks, Ken
