Is there a trick to this, or just something they improved later?"<br /><br /> No doubt, a pain! My '52 Johnson 10HP is almost as bad. The 25HP was improved in '55 with the clamshell cowl which is just like the '54 5.5, 7.5, 10HPs.<br /><br /> I bought some very nice, like new cowl halves with rear cover for my '54 25 and once I put them on, hopefully they'll never come off again
