I've got a 1954 Evinrude Fleetwin 7.5 hp that needs some repair work. I just bought the boat and motor this summer and it is the first boat I have ever owned, so I don't know much at all about repairing boat motors, but I would hate to pay for the price of taking it to the shop. The motor runs ok, but i'm not getting the power out of it that I should be getting.

After tinkering with it, I believe that it is only running on one cylinder. (If I pull the wire off the bottom cylinder's spark plug while the engine is running, the engine keeps running fine, but if I pull it off the top cylinder's spark plug, the engine cuts off) I've replaced the spark plugs, but that didn't help. I have talked to a few people about the problem and they suggested replacing the coils. I don't know anything about doing that type of repair job and I was wondering if anyone knew if that is a very difficult repair job, or if it was fairly easy. I would also like to know where I could find the parts to replace the coils and/or what the part numbers might be. Any info would be great.

I'm also getting low compression in the bottom cylinder. The top cylinder is at about 80psi, but the bottom one is at 40psi, so I'm figuring it may need new rings in it but I'm thinking that type of repair job may be out of my leage.

I'm also thinking it might be a good idea to get a carborator kit and clean and replace the carborator. If anyone has any information on where I could find the parts for that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy, BSD.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You need to start by getting a Service Manual. It will guide you and if you need any help with it we can guide you from there.

If you don't find an OEM Manual on ebay, try kencook.com.

I've got a service manual, I just haven't put the time into studying it yet because I'm a full time college student, but I'm going have several weeks off for christmas break and I was wanting to put some work into my motor and see what I can do with it.

Don't waste your money on a carb kit till you (first) deal with that low compression. Then if that's fixable, on to the coils.

Thats a very simple engine to work on and most shops would tell you that it's not worth the cost of repairs, so if ther compression is low start by removing the head to see if the gasket is blown it happen quite often with the oldetr style gaskets, if it's OK remove the port covers and check for stuck rings or a bad cyl. if it's just worn rings reveiw your manual and I think it's a job most anyone can do in one day. If you decide to make the repair ck the engine for spark before the tear down so you will know what to look for while it's apart.

thanks for the help guys. I'll see what I can do with the low compression problem and if I have any questions I'll post it on here.

Absolutely dont put any loot into it until you address the low compression issue. 80psi is ok, 40 is not. Do as Laddies suggests.

I have the same motor, and it has been running with 90 psi on one side 60psi on the other for as long as i have had it..i think thats why im so partial to it.. It is a quality motor for the year, and want's to run.. Unlike my old gamefisher that tries not to.

I figured I'd update this thread to let everyone know the outcome. It was a blown head gasket. I replaced it and now it runs very good. :) I love this little motor!
