I have a 1954 Fleetwin that I got running this past fall and for a winter project I am looking to add a fuel pump. I know you need to tap the bypass covers on this model for it to work right. The bypass cover on this motor is OMC part number # 202527 and this part does not have the boss cast into it for the fuel pump pulse line. Doing some looking I have found a OMC # 203253 bypass cover online that does have the boss cast into it and appears be the same general shape so I am wondering if anyone knows if the 202523 will bolt up in place of a 202527 or not. The reason I am curious is that I have read that on the 202527 there is not much meat for the hose barb to thread into.

Doesn't look like much meat, but it will be fine. Ive done many of them with the original bypass cover. I drill/tap, then put a bead of epoxy around the outside to help seal and provide a little more support. Then you are good to go.

I did several oldies incl a 7.5 ....a B&S round pump... works like a charm using 3 hoses method ........but the square OMC pump ($$$) on a aluminum plate method .. over a bypass cover is the best way and no need for tapping except the... new ... OMC pumps are more expensive .

just cut a plate (1/16 or 3/32) to fit directly OVER the bypass cover... drill a 1/4 inch hole in the bypass cover itself directly under the aluminum plate.
mount the plate with gasket goo and mount the pump over it . Drill the alu. plate behind the pump for the vacum pulses ... put the gasket under pump and drill 2 extra holes to bolt the pump on the plate

plug the pulse nipple behind the carb and change the side connector to a single line one ... your done !

If you are going to make a plate, first fill the void in the bypass cover with JB Weld, then drill through plate/cover together. That air space left will limit your pulse if not filled.

Of course, the best way is to get a bypass cover ready to rock if you can find one.

Thank Crosbyman and HighTrim for your advice and suggestions. I currently have the round B&S pump that I plan to use on this conversion. I used the Mikuni on my 5.5 conversion but the angle of the Briggs nipples seems better suited for this motor. HighTrim when you mention getting a cover that is ready to rock do you mean finding one that already has the OMC Fuel pump mounted to it. I thought the 7.5's were discontinued before OMC began adding the fuel pumps in the late 50's early 60's? I know there was a substantial amount of parts interchangeability so is there a 60's model OMC that would have had the fuel pump and that the bypass cover would bolt right on to the 54?

here is how I mounted the round pump on a 5.5

the triangular bracket was made with cut-up common 90deg. angles and the pump bolted with nylon nuts
