What year? Probably need to remove the powerhead if she's an oldie.

Re: Johnson 5.5 Shift linkage

Again, year would help. But I have seen some that bolt together. When you have all of the lower unit bolts removed you have to shift in reverse (if I remember correctly) and it will drop the lower far enough to take the shift linkage apart.

But some of them bolt to the shift arm right under the back of the powerhead.

1954 johnson 5.5 motor started right up but no water in exhaust. Where would I look for gears for the tiller handle? might be better off putting in a console with controls and steering wheel

Yup, 54 = powerhead comes off to access the shiftrod. flat head screws under the powerhead come out, disconnect throttle linkage and fuel lines and the powerhead comes off.

Was the water in the barrel up high on the leg? If not she won't pump. No muffs on these motors.

Ok that's a project for tomorrow evening. Last OMC I had (over 25 years ago) you took off a plate and loosened a screw... knew I'd learn something new with this one

OH. no the water was about 3 inches over the lower unit short bucket, not in barrel. Will be in trashcan full of water tomorrow

I have a tiller handle off of a 1955? (might be 57, can't remember, but I really think it was a 55) evinrude 5.5 fisherman. Not positive but I think that they are the same....

How much... and what do I do if it is the engine side that is bad? Accept my loss and buy a newer motor?

There should be a data tag on it with serial and model #. On the transom mount, port side.

The gears in the tiller handles were cast aluminum from 56 on. The 54 and 55 had a sort of a stamped brass type.

UPDATE. Looked at plate and it is a C12. Gears on tiller are good, stamped brass as related. One of the ears that hold the tiller handle was broken when I took the motor out of the box. Called DynaProp (Shell Knob, MO) they have had great results in tigging the broken pieces back together. Motor starts right up (2-3 pull), pumps good water and purrs. Happier camper tonight than last night. This site, and the people on it are great.

They TIG'ed it back together, cool. Hope it lasts, that's a stress point there.

Even if your motor is pumping water now, if you don't know when the impeller was last changed out, it would be a good idea to invest the $20.00 (or less) in a new impeller and change it. Cheap insurance...

Yes, I'm going to replace the impeller anyway. Still looking for proper oil gas ratio 32-1 or 24-1.
